Compressor stall..... or this time of the year, maybe a bird strike. It is migration season.

Quoting JetJeanes (Reply 2):
that caught fire on take off.

It didn't According to the local news feeds there were flames and loud bangs from an engine - indicative of compressor stall or bird strike. An engine fire is different from the aircraft catching fire and flames from an engine are not necessarily an engine fire although a shutdown would be required.

Quoting Philb (Reply 4):

Yup.....compressor stalls make quite the show too...... loud bags, flames out the intake, smoke....... As I said above.. this time of the year, and being MEM I'll lay odds on a bird strike / injestion

There are a lot of blackbirds that hang around the southern part of the airport,, But like most news agencies when first reported, like there was a 747 in flames circleing the city with 10 people hanging on the wings..lol
