As all of you know American Airlines has kept the same color scheme for a very long time, since the late 60's. I think it is time that American works on a revised color scheme. What do you think?

I agree with the above post. That design does NOT look dated at all. I think AA still has a magnificent design and hope they never change it.
I can't even envision them with anything better. The only thing I'm not too crazy about is why they took the shiny silver coating off all of the tails. The pale gray tails make the MD11's, the m80s and 727s all look kinda odd.
Does any knowledgable AA people know why they had to do this? (They apparently *had* to for a legitimate reason. I'm just wondering what it was).

I believe the reason why the vertical tail surfaces don't have that polished aluminum look is the fact today's jets all use composites for their vertical tail surface skins. But I can't wait the retro "Astrojet" scheme that is supposed be on a new-delivery 777-200ER due later this year.

I fully agree with Superfly !
AA's colour scheme is somewhat timeless looking. The bare metal overall is cocky !!!It kinda makes AA's planes look like the great classic Zephyr Trains !How could one even think of dropping this scheme in fav of a new one?

What is the matter with this scheme ?? I find it really not nice at all... they really should update it...how about they try the eurowhite (which Air France launched) ?

Don Carty in a recent American Way article said that AA would not be changing its colour scheme for a long time. So don't get your hopes up. The most we could hope for is more planes in the "Astrojet" scheme.
I think that the current color scheme is great...and timeless. I don't really wnat them to change it.

In December's AA inflight magazine, the chairman wrote a whole article about their livery. It won't be changed. In addition to all of the cosmetic pluses mentioned above, the planes weigh a little less because of less paint, which translates to greater fuel efficiencies. There is also a safety factor in that cracks can be spotted a lot easier than if there were paint over them.

Add me to the list of "don't change the livery" proponents. Other than putting out some more retro's, I'd say don't change a thing.

The masses have spoken. The scheme stays.I wish Delta had never changed their colors. That was my second favorite scheme.Plus it seems like as soon as an airline changes colors, they start to get into financial trouble.

That's a good metaphor that can be applied in all aspects of life!
I do agree that AA show keep there colors the same.

The AA color scheme is classic, as WAS the old old Delta scheme which has also been around forever.
I do like the "AstroJet" scheme, its beautiful. If they paint a 777 in it I will die, it will be beautiful! The 737-800 and the 757-200 in AstroJet colors look stunning. The inclination toward all-white schemes is awful, they look so dirty so fast!!

I think that American has a great scheme. Those planes are the best when the sun hits them and gives a nice reflection or picture opp. They are also great just because of the reflection they give off of anything on the ground around them especially when they are on final.

What other "major" airline has the bare metal scheme? AA has countless numbers of things that I really like about them, and their color scheme is one of them. I would be pissed if they were to change it. It is a classic scheme and extremely well known through out the world. I also like the mix by painting some astrojet schemes, I can't wait to see the 777 Astrojet. Good job AA! Keep up the good work!

I agree with those saying that AA's scheme is GREAT!!!
But, just a question: If you look at AA's 727s, why do they use grey paint on the second engine nacelle, where they paint the USA flag?? It looks quite ugly in my opinion.

I have heard that parts of their planes had to be painted because of the reflections in the sun.
25 Aus_spotter: I don't think AA should change their scheme. I love it just the way it is. I love getting photos of the planes when the sun is shining on them....esp
27 Sr176: Hopefully they keep the silver body and are just update the outdated AA on the tail. It has even a big advantage, they save a remarkable number of kg
