TAM: Still Something Of An Enigma To Me

Boa tarde!

Not sure if the following points have been discussed before, but I flew on TAM (PZ) to Bolivia and back this last week and though the airline is increasingly to my liking, some aspects of it simply do not add-up to me. Let's see if anyone can clear the following:

-TAM apparently enjoys decent profits, yet the food on their regional flights (and that that we are talking of subsidiary PZ) is excellent, as well as plentiful. This while most major airlines are reducing their in-flight service as much as possible?

-Routes such as ASU-CBB-VVI-ASU seem to have fairly modest loads, and yet A320s are operating them as opposed to smaller A319s (which would be more adequate replacements for the F100s, correct?). Is this wise?

-Something a little strange about my return yesterday on PZ701: Advertised as a direct flight, there was a change of aircraft (but not flight number) at ASU, which did not happen on my outbound PZ702. Is that frequent?

-When the new crew boarded at ASU, I noticed 3 captains and zero co-pilots; all had 4 stripes. Normal?

-As we began our descent into EZE, the captain made an announcement which struck me as bizarre for two reasons:

1) It was only in Portuguese and English, when even the stewardesses were Paraguayan;
2) He said "welcome on board Paraguaya 701" and "thank for you choosing to fly Paraguaya" (in both languages)--did "Paraguaya" buy-out TAM?

-What is the new deal with "TAM Airlines"? Do "TAM Brasil", "TAM Linhas Aéreas" and "TAM Mercosur" no longer exist? The purser seemed to tell me so but can anyone corroborate? Are JJ aircraft now assigned on an ad hoc basis to PZ? No more Mercosur flags for any TAM aircraft?

Well, where I can definitely assure that TAM lost money (but endeared itseld to me) is in what they charged me for my return ticket to Bolivia: 2.50USD! But there is a long story behind that so I would never imagine that they do that every day.

Keep up the good work TAM!

Saludos,

ZXV

Evening!

Will try to help you.

1) TAM is working to bring back some old values to the brand TAM and part of these values were a decent inflight service.
2) The idea is to replace all F100 but at same time A319´s can´t be delivered to them yet so this is where the A320´s enter.
3) Have no idea why it happened.
4) It is normal to have only captains flying one aircraft, specially when all of them are being trained in a new equipment. And also on a situation when a master captain is doing a flight check with another captain. Don´t forget that to use 04 strips means a man is a captain, but not necessarily a captain operating a flight. A flights has only one captain responsible for the flight.
5) Probably the flight captain was a JJ captain and not a PZ captain and he did the speech. As a Brazilian, the speech was done in Portuguese and English, remembering that airline language is English. Of course should be more convenient for this flight be a PZ flight that the first speech should be done in Spanish and English. But presuming was a JJ captain checking PZ crew, this could be the reason.
6) Yes, a long time ago. Mr. Rolim bought PZ. What you see is an aircraft using a paint scheme of TAM but crew, flight numbers, traffic rights etc...are all of a Paraguayan company.
7) There is no nee deal about TAM´s name. Since 2001, there is no more TAM Meridional, Marilia or whatever...TAM is became TAM LINHAS AÉREAS S.A.
TAM Mercosur (PZ) now is TAM AIRLINES. These are the only two official names of the companies.

Hope helped you,

Cheers,

TAM Linhas Aéreas is also being marketed as TAM Airlines in foreign countries, I've got the feeling. Is that right?

Honestly, I have no answers to your questions, but all I can tell you is that this past saturday we were spotting at EZE while listening to ATC and believe me from his accent the captain of the PZ flight that arrived that morning was 100% paraguayo  Smile

Well, quite simple really:

Last October I chose PZ for my return flight from VVI to EZE. Simple choice, simple itinerary on paper. One aircraft to fly me through ASU, and get me into EZE that night. VVI-ASU flight delayed 13 hours, ASU-EZE flight dispatched without waiting for inbound aircraft from Bolivia, thus upon arrival in ASU at dawn the following day, all but five of us were made to wait until midday flight ASU-EZE. Long story short: VVI-EZE in 26 hours! A nightmare. Wrote to PZ president upon arrival, lacing letter with factual criticisms of what had happened and how great TAM usually are. Response: One free return ticket to destination of my choice within PZ network. The 2.50USD? Nominal fee for emission of the free ticket. I didn't even have to repeat my story or haggle them to emit that ticket. PZ kept their word, and I respect them for that.  Wink

Muy bien che, y vos?

Like JJMNGR said, I probably got a JJ pilot. I've heard Paraguayan ones on my other PZ flights.
