AS started flying to Hawaii - that's probably one main reason.

Loads do not necessarily relate to profits. Its likely with that much capacity SEA-HNL, that the yields were much lower than needed, and it was better to be in OAK-HNL where there is no other competition.

Support Airliners.net - become a First Class Member!

The 2nd HNL-SEA flight will be back in September. At that time, the SAN-OGG flight will become seasonal again, unless HA can get another 767 by that time.

Bingo - it was a shift of capacity to support the new OAK flight. As Ha763 said, barring new equipment, the SAN-OGG equipment will shift north this fall to return the 2nd daily HNL flight.

Summer, while peak for Hawaii, isn't the peak Seattle-Hawaii travel period, after all, we put up with 9 months of gray, we're sure as hell not leaving during our three months of sun!  Smile

Heck yeah! I never understand why people leave Seattle for vacation in the summer. I don't want to be anywhere else!

I have done the HA SEA-HNL flights a number of times and I never remember there being even one extra seat! Im booked on the "second" (10:15a) SEA-HNL departure in October so I guess its back by then.

As soon as next year for new/used A332 if they exercise the leasing option that was included in the purchase agreement with Airbus (which I believe they will given all that has been happening down here lately). Otherwise first new A332 in 2012 and first A358 in 2017. However, In the conference call last week, it was mentioned that an LOI was signed for 1 763ER to come online later this year. No word on where it is coming from.

I have heard from a reliable source that it is coming from AC.

Yep. The OGG-SAN flight (#38) op's on 9/01 and the 2nd SEA-HNL flt (#27) op's on 9/02 so we can expect a night-time ferry flight from Lindbergh to SEA/TAC on 9/01.

Two questions for HAL, HALFA, HA763 or HA_DC9 (or any other Pualani expert): first, may I assume that the SAN-OGG-SAN flights will be re-introduced as soon as another wide-body is found and ready to fly for HA? (In other words, do you think that will be the first priority for any new long-range bird?)

Second, I notice that Schedule Planning is not using this opportunity (not yet anyway) to move the SAN-HNL departure to the earlier (8:30am) "slot" vacated by the OGG flight in order to finally connect SAN with those int'l flights (to MNL and SYD.) Any talk about that issue maybe being fixed?

Mahalo for any insight.

I'd give 70/30 odds that the SAN-OGG flight will be the first reinstated when we get the new plane. I have heard that the new plane itself will be used in interisland service since its seating configuration is different (and smaller) than our current fleet. That would free up the one we're using now for interisland to be put back on the SAN-OGG route. That is, unless the plane is ready before 9/1/08, in which case it will start up the missing SEA-HNL flight. Once we got more interisland planes (717's or MD-80's) the new 767 would get a new interior and go back to work flying long-haul (with a new destination, maybe).

The 30% odds however are for another international destination like Seoul, Taipei, Melbourne, or Auckland. Or maybe even an East Coast US destination like Baltimore. Dunkerley has said that we will be growing in that direction (Asia), so maybe they'll keep the SAN frequency down to one/day, and grow internationally.

I haven't heard about it, but I think the problem is that in order for the pilots to get the required rest, they can't leave any earlier. To do so would require an earlier departure out of HNL, and there aren't any aircraft available at that time to do the SAN flight. It's one of those 'snowball effect' problems that would take a massive re-do of our entire schedule to solve.

I've heard that Dunkerley talked to the pilots about what's going on (while I was on a trip), and said that the plane in question is currently in a heavy check, and when it's done we will be sending a team of mechanics to look at it and decide if we could use it. No word on which airline it is coming from. He also said that they're looking at more 767's, but no specifics.
