UAL DC-10 Overrun At ORD Info Please!

Ok hey guys I know I am asking a lot but was wondering if anyone could help.

I got a pal who told me about the time he overran at ORD coming from CLE in a Domestic DC-10(NO INS). He said it was the night before UA232 and did not get much news coverage for obvious reasons. Said only a local news had it b/c it was th late flight.

He was running the panel and was also the checkpilot for a new FO who was on his last leg of his 25 hours of IOE.

The FO wanted to grease the landing and touched down 2,500 feet down 22R. That along w/ a few others things that were not the pilots fault led to Dynamic Hydroplaning and ended up w/ the Domestic DC-10 400 feet off the end of 22R.

Non of the pilots lost their job and no one was hurt, since they did nothing wrong but things that were w/in limits all fit.

So my question is, does anyone have like a newspaper clip or info on where to find any info or even the flight number.

Actually the Capt. and FO went on to retire w/ UAL after long careers and my friend is now a Standards Cap on the 767 and is in charge of the special training UAL gets, like he trained the New Zealand Airforce and got all the pilots their type ratings on the 757, so this really did not hurt any of the 3 pilots records. They were off the line for two weeks only b/c everyone was busy w/ 232 the next day. The planes needed new tires b/c one of the reasons the Dynamic Hydroplaning happened was that the FO locked up the breaks right at Vref and the tires turned into viscus.

Any info would be Great!

Thanks

The DC10-10 had INS, just in the number 1 and 2 position.

I forgot about this incident, thanks for the memory refresher! It sure would have made more headlines if it weren't for the fateful flight of UA 232 the following day.

A United Airlines DC-10 carrying 239 passengers slid 300 yards off a runway after it had landed Tuesday night at O'Hare International Airport, according to airport spokeswoman Lisa Howard.

Unfortunately, there is a charge to get the whole article from the Chicago Tribune. If you decide to buy it, please post it!

And still does I believe. As a sidenote, it was the 3rd to last DC-10 delivered from McDonnell Douglas out of a fleet of over 50.

Idk, though, b/c he told me it was the same as 232, and we watched UALs TK 232 training video and one of the problems they face was that SUX VOR/DME was OTS or U/S for the day. They did not have INS to put the LAT/LON in and get some help w/ DME from the airport.

Thanks!

Wow. From the NTSB report: "RUNWAY INSPECTION REVEALED THAT THE RUNWAY GROOVING ALONG THE AIRPLANE'S LANDING ROLL TRACK WAS WORN TO THE POINT TO WHICH IT WAS NONEXISTENT."

"HYDROPLANING ATTRIBUTED TO THE PHYSICAL CONDITION OF THE RUNWAY, AND THE AIRPORT PERSONNEL'S FAILURE TO ADEQUATELY MAINTAIN THE RUNWAY."

You would think that at a US airport, such things are taken care of.

Naw 22R had failed many tests to that point and still does according to him.

Kinda scary bring Heavies on 22R w/ slick conditions.

Incredible. Does this not violate any FAA rules or something? Sounds more like some place in Southeast Asia or subsaharan Africa.

Remind me never to fly through ORD again.

Don't overreact. As far as I know, there has never been a fatal landing accident at ORD.

Landing No, Crash yes. I got a feeling that 22R is still w/in limits, but next time you fly better be ready for a buttpucker :P

For real though, it is sorta scary when u coming in off SAYRS2 after PAPPI for ILS22R and most planes SLAM the breaks to meet the LAHSO or 27L.

O well it may catch up w/ ORD one day.

The good thing is, my pal has become a hugh advocate of bring up the landing data in ACARS he said. And that was amplified when that SWA overran at MDW. So I guess as it is said, u learn from experience.

If anything, I am most concerned that incident such as this doesn't happen again..

But to tell you the truth, I never feel unsafe at ORD.

Me too b/c I have an idea of what is going to happen in a few seconds. But for those not use to traveling, 22R LAHSO of 27L can leave a real bad taste in their mouth.
