An XJT ERJ got dinged up a bit down there... don't have a tail number but a/c was to make up CO2478 to EWR this morning, obviously cancelled. A pitot tube was bent into the fuselage and some minor structural damage was incurred as well. A replacement ship is coming from EWR with mx staff around 2pm, at which point the original crew will ferry the damaged bird to the TYS facility for a repair.

According to the radio this morning....
3 Fedex prop planes
2 Mountain Air Cargo planes
1 Delta
1 Continental
2 US Airways planes were damaged
Other various non-commercial planes.... no heavies were damaged though

The airport was closed to traffic at 11:15pm last night.....

According to one source. There has been 3 confirmed tornadoes and 3 other reported tornadoes. All of which were SW of the airport nearby in Colfax/High Point, one in NW Greensboro and others over towards Winston-Salem.

Interesting video of both the ATR's that were damaged. Both seemed to have the right wing spar broken in almost the same location. Wonder if it was the wind that tipped them up at the same angle to have them fail at similar locations on the wing?

Do none of the Triad TV Stations have their own helicopters? I noticed that WTVD out of Durham provided helicopter footage for all of the stations.

None of them did when I worked there, but I left over 8 years ago. We always borrowed from WTVD or WSOC.

I guess they still don't have any helicopters in the Triad.

My dad works for TSA and said there was also a NW plane blown into a jetway damaging one wing, as well as cars with windows blown out in the south employee lot. Damage to the south end of the terminal roof as well.

What aircraft types are these and what is the extent of the damage?

I think the UA airplane is probably a 767 that was in GSO for the new interior configuration

NW had 2 crjs damaged. One of them had a winglet that was severely bent to the point of almost breaking off. It was kinda dangling off the wing. I spent the night there and had my fiancee in ATL call and tell me to take cover. Nice of the folks in GSO not to blow the tornado siren. People in the hotel lobby claimed to have seen the funnel blow past. The power went out at around 11:15pm and never came back on when we left at noon today.

You should look up the photos of the damage at Riddle from our Christmas Day Tornado if you want to see some chaos.

Anyway, crazy stuff last night. Was in the closet under the stairs from from 1130 till about 1215. You know it's close when the tv people are zooming in and labeling streets that are in the direct path and they're streets right around your's. Fortunately, the most "fun" part of the storm missed my place by about a mile or so to the south. I did feel my ears start to pop though when the worst part of the storm came to its closest point- we weren't far. The funnel cloud basically followed the path I would drive to get home from work- Bryan Blvd to Westridge to Old Battleground then down Lake Jeanette Rd.

I've had enough fun with tornadoes to last me a lifetime just in the past couple years- Riddle being hit by the tornado in 2006, then the tornado warnings in Daytona back in February during race weekend- the funnel cloud went about a mile or two south of my place there too. Had a couple close calls in middle Georgia around 1999 or 2000 too.

Sad to see all the damage from those tornados. Good thing there are few casualties among people. Sad too to hear about the damaged planes at GSO. Lucky there weren't many more planes damaged, however they will have their hands full for a while it seems getting the dents out.

As for the ATRs it is a bit surprising to see the wing spars broken towardds the tips. Goes to show that you would be safer aboard a Q400 during a little off roading, as we have seen in recent times. All three Q400 just scrapped along the tips during their 2 wheel off road excursions  Wink  duck

Will that ATR 42 be repaired of FX? So far the following have damage:

2 NW CRJ's
1 XJet ERJ
1 UA 767
2 US a/c type please?
2 FX ATR's
NW a/c type please?

Sorry to hear the damages. Hopefully only minor adjustments will need to made in scheduling.

Greensboro is not Oklahoma--1) Tornadoes are pretty infrequent in that area 2) I'd be surprised if there were "tornado" sirens in the GSO area

I got my head checked--by a jumbo jet

Your welcome. I never thought a ATR could be tossed around let alone a NW jet being pushed around.
