DL To Close Several Crown Room Lounges

Delta will be closing 12 of their Crown Rooms shortly. A few of the cities are rather shockers, but I guess we will see what happens. They are going to rely on CO and NW recip. lounge agreements.
Cities that will close.

Boston (Main Terminal A) will keep satellite club open, NW also has club.
Denver (continental has lounge)
Honolulu (already closed) (NW has one)
Kansas City (CO nor NW have one)
London Gatwick (North Terminal Departures) yet the hotel lounge will stay open????
Phoenix
Seattle (NW and CO have one)

I was also looking at many of the hours of the lounges, and found that even in hub cities, DL often doesn't have some lounges open on the weekends? Whats the deal with that? I also noticed few have wi-fi and if they are its t-mobile service and not free. Perhaps DL will take some lessons from NW's WorldClubs.

The Boston one is definitely a real shocker, considering that DL has quite a presence there. Gatwick makes sense, as DL is shifting to LHR, and I'm frankly surprised that there was any lounge at all in Kansas City. Well, if it means that DL has a bit more $$$...

How many Crown Rooms are there in total?

The sky is the limit as long as you can stay there

I was thinking maybe they would close the DFW lounge. If they did, UA could remodel it and finally make their move to Concourse E.

CO will be taking over the Boston Terminal A (Main Terminal A) clubroom, and converting it into a President's Club.

This was announced a month or two ago. I'm just shocked by the SEA cut - it was nearly brand new, and was, in my experience, the nicest CRC in the system. Sad, but if it keeps the airline afloat, then so be it.

I wonder if DL is sure enough of the merger to start shift customers to World Club spots? I have been in the DL CR in Denver, and it is/was quite nice. Kansas City was a suprise place for a lounge. HNL makes more sense to have a single lounge with NW. Once large lounge, esp while CO is still Skyteam, would make some sense.

After the merger (assuming it goes through) wonder if DL will move around and/or expand the current lounge.

Well, being one of two there, it's not really. A shock would have been if they closed them both.

I was talking to one of the DL guys at the Business Elite lounge at JFK T2, he was saying DL plan to merge the Crown Room and the Business Elite lounges into a single facility, which seems to make sense. I don't know if that's just at JFK, or elsewhere.

There was a time when DL had CRC's in most cities. Even the smaller stations had a "courtesy club," a self-serve room. (ok, places like Bangor Maine never had them).

But I remember fondly:

STL

BDL
MEM
PIT
BWI

IND
MSP
DTW

And many, many others

Several of the 12 'closures' listed are really conversions of two separate, adjoining Crown Room and BusinessElite lounges into a single facility. A little deceptive...

Ref the customer effect on Delta's Blog (Who knew they had one??):

http://blog.delta.com/2008/04/16/crown-room-club-spring-changes/

According to the blog they are closing "secondary" lounges. According to the blog, ATL and JFK will indeed loose Biz Elite and become Crown Rooms, but with Biz Elite amenities, including appetizers. Since Crown Room never had proper appetizers before, will this be in a restricted section? A new general service? I will say, having been in ATL and CVG Biz Elite lounges, I was never impressed. The only difference was your Crown Room Card wouldn't get you in, Elite could with Y boarding pass, or anyone with C boarding pass. However, C pax could also use regular Crown rooms day of travel. In short, they were the same I thought.

I will be interested to see where this goes.

The BOS Main Terminal Crown Room will become a Continental President's Club next week (I believe May 16 is the official date).

Big part of the reason for the SEA closure was the extremely high rent that the Port of Seattle was charging for the space. I'll agree - it's one of the top 5 CRCs that I've been to in the system (been to about 70% of them) but the Sea-Tac airport just wanted too much for the space.

I don't think STL ever had a CRC at any time in the last 30-35 years that I recall, but my brain aint what it used to be so I could be wrong. Where was this club located at STL, I know that Eastern did have a small Ionosphere Club there for a while though in Concourse A, as well as the TWA Ambassador and American Admirals Clubs located in the main terminal near the baggage claim.

The loss of the CRC in PHX is devastating. It was always busy. And it was the only oasis that is the vast wasteland of Terminal 3. I am seriously depressed.

American Airlines had the same issue with the SEA airport authorities and decided to close its Admirals Club due to excessively high rents (and if i remember the rent was outrageous).

The issue about rent may be a real one, but I suspect that if anyone dug into the issue with rent at SEA, you would find that the lease that DL signed has several more years to run. So DL will still be paying rent most likely!

Personally, I suspect that CRCs were money makers, not losers. They stopped giving free memberships to Platinums in Feb 2007, so everybody pays, either with a membership or with an AMEX platinum card (and soon the new DL Reserve card). And rumor has it that Amex forks over a pretty penny every time they swipe your card for entry.

I believe it closed when DL moved over to the new Concourse A - the old club in Concourse B wasn't that great - outside of security and pretty small. Still, if the DL/NW merger goes through, I could see a club coming back to BDL to support the AMS flight and the large combined operations out of BDL for the merged carrier.

Yup - front desk personnel (or the ticketing agents at most of the hub clubs since there's a different agent checking people in) will gladly give you one if you're a CRC member. No Amex Plat, day pass users, NW/CO club members, SkyTeam Elite+ or international premium passengers get them though - only if you have the CRC card.

I remember reading somewhere that they paid something like $18-23 per swipe. Not a bad bit of revenue coming in for DL.
