Just checking the arrivals board at KUL and its interesting to note that United Airlines now code-shares into Kuala Lumpur.
UA4746 however operates KUL-DOH and is operated by Qatar Airways,
Does anyone know why UA code-shares with QR rather than other Star Alliance carriers already operating into KUL?

Quoting MAS777 (Thread starter): Does anyone know why UA code-shares with QR rather than other Star Alliance carriers already operating into KUL?
I would suppose that UA and QR were able to reach an arrangement mutually beneficial to them. There's no requirement for UA to always have to turn to other Star Alliance carriers if other carriers better suits is commercial needs.

BMI code shares with QR.. I keep hoping QR would join Star Alliance.
Having said that I recently cashed some airmiles on an EK flight from LHR - DXB using my United Airmiles and they are not star alliance either.
So far in 2008 45 flights and Gold already. JFK, IAD, LGA, SIN, HKG, NRT, AKL, PPT, LAX still to book ! Home Airport LCY

UA and QR have recently signed a Code share agreement where they code share extensively on each others routes. And a lot was then speculated that QR would join *A as it also code shares with LH on some TATL flights.
Also airlines do code share with carriers out of their alliance Eg. EK code shares with airlines of all alliances.

I also thought it would be a transpacific codeshare, perhaps with NH, from NRT.
Surprised that NW has not codeshared with MH on KUL-NRT, using MH's existing route, considering MH looks more likely to join Skyteam. In fact, NW themselves operated a DC10 into KUL until around 2003.
The other US carrier "operating" into KUL would be DL, codeshared with KE.
Despite these 2 US carriers "technically" flying to KUL now, the Malaysia Airports people have not seen fit to advertise (in the newspapers) a welcome for the new airlines flying into their home base, like they would usually do.

Quoting CX288 (Reply 6): As does Lufthansa, at least between Doha and Germany. No idea about beyond flights though.
QR codeshares on certain other LH connecting flights. You can book QR GVA-FRA-DOH or GVA-MUC-DOH. The GVA-FRA and GVA-MUC sectors are operated by LH and the longhaul sectors by QR. That's in addition to QR's own DOH-GVA-EWR flights.
