I wonder, when is Finnair going to replace their beautiful MD 11's?
I really like the plane and it looks beautiful in the new colours but I have a feeling that they are pretty old (please correct me if I am wrong, which I might be).

When it's time to replace them, no mather when, what do you think it will be?
I think that the 777 would look great in Finnair livery, but a more realistic guess would be a A330 or perhaps 767.

I dont see finnair replacing there MD-11'S soon . But if they would I guess they would choose the A330-200 or A330-300 but that wont happen anytime soon.

When its time to replace the MD11 I think they probably order from Boeing. Look at most other Oneworld airlines.

G'day

If I recall correctly, Finnair was the first airline to put MD11's into service. I doubt they will be the last passenger airline to operate them though.

To a small carrier like Finnair commonality matters more than any perceived advantages in going with options like the 772 or 764X. A few of either the 332's or 343's will suit them fine.

Cheers
Peter

Well... this may seem surprising, but in 1993 Finnair had signed a LOI with ILFC and Boeing for the leasing of Boeing 767-300's! They were going to phase out the MD-11 and phase in the 763's... as we can see now that didn't happen and the MD-11's are still going strong... the oldest one is only 11 years old, not bad...

I don't expect them to be replaced in the near future, but when they do I would see them opt for the Airbus long-haul aircraft (they were on the verge of ordering the A340, but Airbus then offered older-generation engines than earlier agreed upon, and that was the end of that deal!) due to the commonality factors, it matters a pretty good amount for smaller carriers like Finnair.

Um no.  Insane

They've not had any DC-10-30's since about 1995 or so, they operate a long-haul fleet of exclusively MD-11 aircraft. OH-LGA (the first MD-11) was repainted and went back into service on 16FEB I believe, on the HEL-JFK-HEL route.

Yes, Finnair was the first to put MD11 into service (OH-LGA). AY is a small carrier but their MD11's usually are quite full so I don't think they will reduce capacity when replacing them. Airbus looks more likely for me but who knows... it won't happen soon anyway.

I hope it won't happen soon, the AY MD11s are really nice aircraft. I love to see their livery on their MD-11s.

It's likely AY will try to fly their MD-11 fleet till at least 2008. By that time, they could be a strong candidate to buy the Airbus A340-500 series (they don't need the 747 "Classic" size seating of the A340-600).

I give Finnair ummm, 2-3 years before they replace them. It might be sooner, but, definitely wont be longer than 3 years. Look at all the other airlines replacing them.

I'm sure Finnair arent looking at replacing their MD-11s in the near future but it will happen, which will be sad to see such a great tri-jet out of service, at least with Finnair anyway.

Gkirk, u say look at all the oneworld partners going for Boeing, well look at Qantas, did they buy Boeing!? I think not and seeing Finnair has some Airbus narrowbodys and other Boeing aircraft its really a tossup between the two. I have a feeling that when they are replaced that it will be either an A330 version or small 777, maybe 767.
