AIRLINERS.NET CREW
FORUM MODERATOR

Airliners.net is pleased to announce that we will be taking part in a media event at the Boeing 787 factory on May 19th.

The agenda will include a tour of the 787 assembly line, an up close and internal look at 787 fuselage #2, and a tour of the 787 static test rig.

We will also be conducting a question and answer sessions with both Pat Shanahan, Vice President and General Manager of the 787 Program, and Randy Harley, Vice President of Engineering & Technology for the 787 program.

As part of this exciting event, we wanted to provide the opportunity for the Airliners.net community to provide ideas as to the types of information you would like to know about the 787 program, including questions.

These ideas and feedback will be used as part of an upcoming article that will be written updating the progress and status of the 787 project.

Thank you

1. WHEN IT WILL FLY?
(Yes I am screaming )

2. Expected life for the airframe? would the composite fuselage allow for longer life than an aluminium airframe?

1) Take lots and lots of pictures.
2) When is the thing going to actually go into service?

Im afraid to post a question for fear I'll get the boot because it's been asked/answered before!

But here goes. Will the globality of the components composition of the 787 shrink a bit given some of the delays and quality difficulties that have been experienced with suppliers, or even given the rising costs of transportation/shipping?

1) Once the 787 starts flight test, will Boeing send the aircraft to the home airports of component companies (ie, Nagoya, Charleston, Seoul, Southern Italy...)?

2) Are airlines warming up to the 3-2-3 seating, preferring a 2-4-2 or is the 3-3-3 seating arrangement still a common choice?

3) What is the "after life" plan for the 787? How can the carbon fiber body be recycled and what are possible internal reuses for the recycled aircraft parts?

This is a question to Anet. Who will be the Representative(s) from Anet.? What are the qualifications, ie: Years in Airline industry and or years of aviation engineering etc.? Having this information will help the members consider how technical etc., the questions should be. Thanks. John.

-What's going to happen to the B783?
-Overweight issues?
-What about a 2nd line?
-What are the plans for a B787-1000?
-Until when are the order books full?
-Are they confident that it will really fly? (don't ask, they'll be pissed)
-Expected seat-mile cost lower than any existing aircraft (including B748i?)??
-Technical question: Is the bleedless system really worth it? What are the pro's and cons?
-Fire resistance?
-How do they explain the delays? Do they feel responsible for it?
-How is the personnel reacting?
-How are the suppliers reacting to the delays?
-How will the slowdown affect the B787?
-How long is the flight test campaign expected to last?
-Will they break a wing? What if it fails?
-When will they do the cold-test?
-Does the B787 compete with the B777?
-Would the B787 be a good contender for the next tanker replacement contest?
-Why was it necessary to outsource this much of the aircraft?
-Will the B787 meet its target performance? What if not?
-Are they going to sell more B787's?
-What does the ramp-up schedule look like, today?
-How will a CFRP fuselage react to hail-strike? Birdstrike? lightning-strike?
-Are the bigger windows really worth it?
-What about the hacking issues?
-How would fuel at 200$ affect the program?
-Is it really worth opening the B767 line to build intermediary lift? When will the aircraft be ready?
-Would they pay if their customers decide to acquire A330's while waiting for the 787's?
-Are there any phases that might pose additional risks? What are they?
-What problems/issues do they expect during flight testing?
-How does the weak dollar affect Boeing/suppliers in paying for outsourced work?
-Was the roll-out really worth it?
-What have they learned from these delays? What will they do better in the future?
-Did they know about the delays before roll-out?
-How many people are working on the B787 at Boeing?
-Are they happy about their foreign suppliers?
-CFRP is cheaper to maintain, is it cheaper to repair?
-GEnx bleedless engines fitted on the Dreamliner will be 15% more efficient than similar existing engines. What about bleedair B748i engines? Will it have any efficency gain compared to similar existing engines? How much?
-Why bleedless on the B787 and why not on the B748I?
-How will O³ be filtered on bleedless systems?
-Why have they centered the project around the smaller B788?
-How many do they expect to sell in 2008? in 2009?
-Will there be further delays?
-What's the expected lifespan of the B787? Cycles?

1) Have you thought/planned about extended 787's fuselage? Most airlines want to have a long fuselage so that it helps to increase capacity.

2) I am really curious about 787's wingtips. It looks a very special design. Is it possible to see the wingtips flip up and down when flying? If yes, why? Will it break if there's strong turbulence and too much stress?

Thanks ... I will ask you more questions until May 9th

1. Are airliners demanding compensation from the delivery delays?
2. When the first flight will be?
3. Is the 787-300 variant now totally scrapped?

Those are the top 3 questions that I would like to have some answers.

Some questions:
- How complete were the different sections for LN2 and LN3 when they arrived at Everett (to see how far some the different major suppliers lags behind the rest,) and how did the completeness of each section improve on LN3 compared to LN2.
- How fast can a 787 go through the MOAT at this point (body-/wing join in the Mother Of All Tools at the back of the final assembly line.)
- How long will the static and fatigue testing last?
- Has Boeing seen the desired improvements at Global Aeronautica after Boeing acquired Vougth's part of the company?
- Some of the major suppliers hired staff that did not have any experience with building aircraft (parts.) Is this still a major issue (and part of the reason behind the slower ramp up)?
- One of the engines for the 787 did not meet the fuel burn target, what plans does this engine manufacturer have to solve this (major) problem?
- Will Boeing eventually be able to produce 16 787s per month?

How has the amount of outsourced work affected current contract talks with the Boeing unions?
What, if any contingency plan is in place in the event of a strike in order to mitigate even further production delays?
They may not be able/willing to answer that 2nd one.

What is the impact of the devaluing dollar having on the economics of the global supply chain?

Are the component purchases sold on a US$ basis or on a local currency basis?

If on a US$ basis how often can the supplier change the cost?

If on a US$ basis are you concerned that forcing foreign suppliers to perform for devalued US$ will force some of them into financial problems or bankruptcy?

If on a local currency basis how far forward in the production are you hedged?

What is the Boeing feeling about the A350XWB ?
How do they feel the 787 delay , compared to the A350XWB ? They have lost one part of their advance.

I would really like to know how much the wings will flex upwards during flight. In the images created by Boeing, it shows extreme upward flexing of the wings. I would like to know if they will really flex that high?
