I got an email from NWA about a new NRT-SPN flight.

Quote:
Northwest Airlines® is pleased to announce the launch of a second daily non-stop service from Narita to Saipan, starting from July 1, 2008. Sit back and relax in the comfort of World Business ClassSM and enjoy Video On Demand entertainment throughout Economy Class on our new A330-300 aircraft. This new service makes traveling to Saipan even more convenient and also complements our existing daily non-stop services to Saipan from Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya.

NRT-SPN
Flight Number Departs Arrives Effective Date
NW 100 8:45pm 1:25am July 1, 2008

SPN-NRT
Flight Number Departs Arrives Effective Date
NW 99 5:00am 7:40am July 2, 2008

So why is NWA adding this flight? Seems like they are just using the aircraft on a short run rather than flying it off to someplace further out. This flight could also connect with US pax, Asian Pax but seems to catch mostly Japanese pax.

Comments welcome.

Yes...I am not a KIX fan. Let's Japanese Aviation!

Interesting... the downloadable desktop timetable reflects a 757 as the equipment for this flight. I just checked nwa.com and it is indeed a 333. Looks like instead of overnightting this plane as they do now, it will do another SPN turn.

Right now there are 3, 333s that arrive in the evening, from HNL, SPN and GUM. One of these returns to HNL and two overnight providing the a/c for the morning GUM and SPN departures. Instead of doing this, one of the planes can sneak in a SPN turn instead.

NWA must see a demand for more seats to SPN and the possibility to meet the demand whilst making a profit. This is what all airlines should do... it's called maximizing the use of your assets for positive revenue.

While there is nowhere near the number of Japanese travelers going to GUM/SPN over previous years, JO used to operate NRT-SPN and NW had the 742 on that route, so even with two daily A333s, it's still below capacity pre-2001 levels.
NW used to have only one 742 overnighting at NRT pre-2001, when it had a similar run on the NRT-GUM.

Upon further investigation this new flight operates with a 333 only from July 1 to August 31 and downgauging to a 752 on September 1.

In other NWA news, NWA will be flying a 3rd daily NRT-HNL-NRT for part of the summer once again this year. Flights 17/18 will operate for the month of August using 333 equipment.

Schedule:

NW18 NRT-HNL 2035-905 333
NW17 HNL-NRT 1510-1825+1 333

DTW-PVG also appears to be loaded in the schedule as well. Westbound flights start March 28, 2009 and eastbound flights start March 30, 2009.

Schedule:

NW89 DTW-PVG 1545-1830+1 744
NW90 PVG-DTW 845- 1025 744

Quoting Azjubilee (Reply 3):

NW89 DTW-PVG 1545-1830+1 744
NW90 PVG-DTW 845- 1025 744

That's only good for PVG based travelers, I guess. A lot different UA/AA's ORD-PVG-ORD schedule, but similar to NW it's own DTW-NRT-PVG schedule.
