UA is suspending LAX-MEX for 3 months and opening LAX-SJD which did not perform good for F9. I am missing something here...

Its just kinda sad, United applied for the flight back in January and was willing to commence service immediately in April once F9 dropped out, however even on a expedited basis the DOT took near 6 months to finalize things causing the summer peak to come and go.

UA was probably the better choice than both Delta and Virgin due to its hub in LAX. Connections are king.

you cannot compare MEX and SJD... totally different demand cycles, different customer bases, differenet aircraft (Ted vs. Mainline), etc etc.

SJD will be just like all our other flights to sun spots in Mexico- full of American baby boomers going on cheap holidays.

The debate continues... Starwood or Hyatt... which is better

Yes! But why did they take so long? Flights begin Operating year-round staring 8/20 and will run a second daily from 8/21-9/1.

Agree, they are totally difference markets, but still, I don't understand why UA is opening LAX-SJD with AS, AA and MX already flying the route and the alliance between AA and MX being so strong in the LAX-SJD market. and it doesn't matter if it is a TED or a United aircraft, TED is an airline within an airline and history has proved that an airline within an airline...

UA is leaving LAX-MEX just because there is too much competition from MX/AA (codeshare), AM and AS (who just reduced to 1 daily), therefore, it is amazing that UA wants to open this route at current oil prices. The whole UA strategy in Mexico and Latin America has always puzzled me...

Well If not UA whom should operate this route in your opinion then?

Both DL and VX applied however the DOT found their proposals lacking compared to UA.

SJD is one of the top SoCal vacation spots with growing demand each year. UA operates a hub that can besides local LA demand provide connectivity up the West Coast.

I'm sure UA will do just fine in this beach market, one that it has sought to serve for over 4 years now.

In my opinion, nobody else should operate this route for the time being, since demand is already covered by AS, AA and MX. Mexico has only 1 airline operating the route (MX) and I don't see AM jumping in. There are 2 unused authorities for Mexican airlines that won't be used in a long time.

Now, if we consider that Mexico and USA changed the bilateral agreement in 2006 to allow 3 airlines of each country to operate between a point in Mexico and a point in the USA (except to Mexico City), and you really want an airline to operate the route, then DL could be an option with an AM codeshare to compete against MX and AA, but I still don't see a great market. It is amazing that US airlines want to step into some unprofitable US/Mexico routes dropped by competitors. I lived in San Jose del Cabo and have friends there so I do know the market size and its seasonality!!! By the way, AS already provides great connectivity to the west coast...

I remember a couple of years ago when DL dropped the MEX-LAX-MEX route, there was a strong battle between CO, AA and AS for the route authority. All of them claimed they will fly twice daily with B73G's, B738's or B757's since there is a strong demand in this route and profits were there. AS was given the route and after one year of operations (even with a hub in LAX), AS saw that MEX-LAX was strongly dominated by MX and cancelled one daily flight due to losses while UA (with a hub in LAX) was also losing money on the route. UA just announced it will stop flying the route for three months just to keep route authority. Interesting way of doing business...

I hope LAX-SJD does well for UA-Ted.
I believe AS does still operate LAX-MEX-MEX twice daily during peak seasons of the year when it's warranted. The rest of the time, it seems like once daily is adequate, and considering the fue costs to operate anything it seems like they are doing the right thing to not put the route on shaky ground.
