Let's see, keys, wallet, cell phone, money...Hey honey, what am I missing befoe I leave the house to go to where, oh yeah, work. Damn, I forgot the parachute, becuase I was in such a hurry to get out of the house. If it weren't for my ol' lady I woudln't have pants to wear for work. Or at least how she claims it.

I can understand forgetting a wallet, but to forget to put on a parahucte? Either ol' boy was really that dumb, or he just wanted to film his suicide.

Damn, I am originally from Huntsville, AL and spent way too much time in Prince George County, VA, I should have seen the logic in this guy's thinking. Now I know why my parents didn't have other kids. My cousin used the second story of his house as a deer stand. He bagged some good deer too, the antlers are hanging over his garage.

Even worse is my Father-in-Law got bit by a pirhhana in a drainage ditch as a kid on his way to going fishiing in the Demarara River in Guyana. Geographically that really southern. He got the scar to prove it, but I don't know if I believe it. I didn't think you could get more southern or backward than Alabama. Don't get me started on ox tail soup (or souse) and grits.

Some years ago a German politician, Juergen Moellemann of the FDP, committed suicide by not opening his parachute after jumping out of a plane. He used to be an avid skydiver, but he got caught being involved in a corruption scandal and was about to appear for an investigation in front of a party committee, which probably would have ended in him being kicked out of the party and held criminally responsible for bribing, election fraud and embezzlement. He knew that his political career was finished and that he would probably end up in prison.

Since I am from southern Indiana, we have all of those jokes on queue, usually with a reference to Kentuckians somewhere. The way I heard it is, "What is the last thing a says before they die? Hold onto my beer and watch this!"

Was this guy caught up in the moment and jumped without thinking? Or did he do it on purpose? The article didn't really go into that.

There was a case in 2003, where the sky diver's parachute straps had been deliberately before being packed.
Intitally a murder inquiry, in the end though there was an open verdict, based on only the deceased DNA being found on the equipment, the probability being that he took his own life.

Particulalry chilling is this snippet from the local rag, the Albany Times:

"The videographer filmed as Carafello fell and Carafello took pictures of himself while falling through the air, according to Rawlins. Police have the video."

Actually, he disposed of his chute while diving towards mother earth and had disabled the altimeter of the rescue chute.

It appears from media reports that this was intentional. He was not equipped with a 'chute and was only supposed to be along for the ride. According to the pilot, shortly after the jumpers went out the door, he unbuckled his seat belt and followed them out. Yes, apparently he was taking pictures of himself with a still camera as he fell.
