Just randomly checking FlightAware this morning I noticed 3 Southwest flights coming from Reading, Harrisburg and Wilkes Barre/Scranton (Flights 8420, 8422, & 8424 respectively). The history shows that these flight numbers have operated these routes before.

Obviously this isn't scheduled service for WN, but it is somewhat regular (2x a month or so). It looks like some sort of vacation charter operation, but I've never heard of WN doing anything like that. Anyone know what it is? Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Dave in Orlando

I think these are charter packages through Boscov's travel.

You don't need a passport to know what state you're in...

That is correct. Currently MDT has 7 flights from the beginning of the year untill the end of june. I'm not sure about how many AVP and RDG have. LNS and ABE also do charters various times through out the year with Boscov's. Currently only ABE has regular service to Orlando/SFB on G4 ( of the PA airports that have the charters ).

Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware that Southwest did that kind of business, but it makes sense.

We do lots of charters. If you see and oddball flight number on a weekend and/or late at night on city-pairs that we don't normally serve, you can reasonably assume that it's a charter or a ferry to/from a charter.

Yes, and in the summer they are always full. When I was in MCO I worked these all the time. Packed to the wall with 250-290 bags for 137 paxs.  yuck

I was looking on Boscov's site and found this

BTW I'm surprised that MDT doesn't have a scheduled flight to MCO like win SYR do, it's got to be one of the biggest cities in the eastern US with one.

We did have regular 3-4x a week when Transmeredian was in business MDT-SFB. Also US had Saturday service but that has since ceased. We could easily handle 1 or 2 daily mainline's to Orlando. One reason G4 didn't come to MDT was because of high landing fees for the new terminal. WN has big ops in PHL and BWI, FL doesn't want to expand it seems, and NK is not doing so well right now. I would think they would be our only hope since Legacies are all reducing cities and flights. Hopefully some day we'll get it back with who ever we can get.

It took SYR a long time to get a non-stop to MCO, too. I believe the city subsidized B6 to the tune of about $600k to get it, and it's obviously worked well enough to stick around. I've taken it a few times, and it's always packed to the gills (not to mention about $100 more than the one-stops, too). As for MDT, didn't they have seasonal US service to MCO? I think I read it was dropped a year or two ago, unfortunately. MDT will get it in due time, though. At least there are a few major airports within short driving distance.
