QATAR AIRWAYS SELECTS THE A330 AND CONTRIBUTES TO THE LAUNCH OF THE A380

Qatar Airways is becoming a new customer for both the A380 and the A330. Having decided to acquire two of Airbus’ all-new very large airliner plus two options, Qatar Airways becomes the ninth customer for the highly successful aircraft. Qatar Airways also selected the A330, having decided to acquire five of the highly successful A330-200 plus three options.

“We have built our airline on providing passengers with the very highest standards of service, and the new A330 and A380, with their unsurpassed cabin comfort, economy and reliability, will help us to remain a leader in this field,” says Qatar Airways Chairman His Excellency Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor Al Thani. “The Airbus aircraft were the clear winners of our comprehensive evaluation of competing aircraft, “ he adds.

Launched in December 2000, the A380 today has won 66 firm commitments from nine customers, plus another 54 options. It is the only firmly launched new programme in its class, and has won every single competition for very large aircraft so far. In addition to offering airlines a way to grow their capacity to meet the doubling of passenger traffic that will occur in the next 15 years, the A380 takes the industry a huge leap forward in passenger comfort, economy and performance, promising to introduce passengers to a new way of flying that will become a benchmark in airline travel.

Both A380s will be delivered in the last quarter of 2007, giving the carrier the increased capacity that it will need by then on its most heavily travelled routes, as well as a 21st Century flagship with which to grow its business and modernise its fleet.

Qatar’s selection of the A330-200 further confirms the success of the aircraft in the 250-seater class. Together with the rest of the A330/A340 family, it is a consistent leader in independent passenger surveys. In addition to a cross-section optimised for passenger comfort and cargo carriage, the A330-200 offers unmatched range and economy that is far ahead of its competitors.

A total of 58 customers have placed firm orders for 688 A330/A340 aircraft, which represents many more customers and sales than any other aircraft in the 250-375 seat category.

Deliveries of the A330-200s will begin in April 2002. They will be used to replace A300-600Rs on Qatar Airways’ flagship Doha-London route and other services to Europe and Asia, as well as to inaugurate new nonstop services to the Far East. The A330s will seat 235 passengers in a first, business and economy layout.

Qatar Airways has chosen General Electric CF6-80E1 engines to power its A330-200s. It has yet to select engines for its A380s.

“Qatar Airways has rapidly become an airline of standing in the Middle East, and is now poised to consolidate and grow even further, as its decision to expand with the A330 and A380 shows, “ says Airbus Chief Executive Officer Noël Forgeard.

Qatar Airways currently operates a fleet of six A320s and seven A300-600Rs on airline services, as well as an Airbus Corporate Jetliner and an A340 on behalf of the Qatar Amiri Flight. It is thus well placed to integrate the A330 and A380 into its fleet, since they share the same basic cockpit, handling qualities and procedures as the A320 and A340.

Airbus is jointly owned by BAE SYSTEMS with 20 per cent and by EADS with 80 per cent.

This is funny. An airline with a total of SIX A320s and SEVEN A300s (total of 13 whole aircraft) has decided to order 2 A380s (which probably equal the capacity of their entire current fleet) with an option for 2 more.

It's a good thing that Qatar Airlines doesn't have to deal with things like "shareholders" and profit/loss statements. I do notice that they plan to use the A330s on the flagship London-Doha route. I wonder on what particular route they will need an A380? (much less 4 of them?)

In my opinion the A380 will be used by Qatar Airways on heavily traveled ME routes . For example to Saudi Arabia especially during Haddj which the A380 could be very helpfull in . Also on other very heavily middle eastern routes . I think that with the A330-200 maybe Qatar Airways can look at expanding into the states who knows . Maybe one day we will see Doha-London-New York route . Way to go another airline that orders the A380 YAYYYYYYYYY.

so this press released doesn´t even refer to the a-380. and i think if they had bought the a-380, any press article would mention that because it´s just a huge story.
please, don´t ask me about QantasA3XX´ press article, i don´t have an answer to explain these contradicting statements but i really don´t think that qatar would get the a-380 because it seems way to big for them.
well, however we´ll just have to wait see.
i doubt that they´ll get the a-380, imho.

please, don´t ask me about Khoahuynhuk´s press article, i don´t have an answer to explain these contradicting statements but i really don´t think that qatar would get the a-380 because it seems way to big for them.
well, however we´ll just have to wait see.

Another strike for Airbus. Really neat to see such a small company as Qatar Airways is buying the A380. Hmmm, hopefully they fly with this aircraft to Europe some time.

The new order is in addition to the one placed in 1999 with Airbus Industrie for six A320 aircraft, another airline official said.

The A320s, due to be delivered between late 2001 and 2003, are being financed by a $270 million loan arranged by Barclays group along with Germany's Hypo Vereinsbank and Qatar National Bank . Each plane costs $45 million.

Airline officials said Qatar Airways will have to seek new loans from the international market to finance Tuesday's deal.

Qatar Airways, founded in 1995 with a leased plane from Kuwait Airways, is 50 percent owned by the Gulf Arab state's government. The rest is held by private Qatari investors, including members of the ruling family and Qatar Insurance Company .

It operates nine aircrafts - five Airbus 320s and four Boeings - to around 28 destinations.

The airline has embarked on a major expansion to increase its fleet and reach more than 70 destinations during this decade. It has also taken over ground handling, duty free and aviation fuel supply services at Doha International Airport.<<<

however, i´m still wondering why they´re going for such a big plane but they certainly have a good reason to do so.
could it be that possibly one or both a-380s would be operated for the qatar amiri flight-thing, which is operated by qatar airways but i think operates flight for the scheichs and the royal people of qatar?

Good possibility as the planes that operate the Amiri flights are full of luxuries . The A380 could be filled with different luxuries and the scheics would really like that .

QR are much cheaper to travel with than Emirates and many people flying to the UK from South Asia are turning to Qatar Airways so that could explain the A380 order Smile

As I said in a different posting, I can see it now.....99GBP LHR-DOH. QR's high traffic flows are into Europe-India/Bangladesh/Nepal (whose airports would have a heck of a time with an A380), and Europe-UAE. I can see them using it on the DOH-LHR route, but for them to even come close to filling it, the fares will have to come down through the floor. GF will be forced to drop its fares to match, which with the lower capacity, will result in major losses for GF.
