US Airways Express pulling out of Medford, OR September 2nd. Article says more cities to follow...

Pretty bad news for MFR, it's been having record growth, but it's been on the chopping block for a few airlines lately. United cut flights, then Horizon, now US Air is leaving completely. The Rogue Valley is pretty isolated ( 4hr drive to PDX, 4hr to SMF)... this is gonna hurt.

It's such an isolated area, but I doubt the yields are high. My family up there will really hate to hear this.

QX hasn't cut flights. And rumor has it that USex had a few of the locals bid for ground handling a daily CR9 to Vegas after they pull out. BUT like i said this is a rumor.

SKYHIGH Airlines- It's important that we get the SkyHigh message out there. That message? Thank you for your money.

According to the article, YV has "about" 20 employees for 2 flights a day? Is that correct?!

QX is only going from 3 Q200s + 2 Q400s to 2 Q200s and 2 Q400s ... that's only 30 seats ...

But this will probably change again if USAirways does pull out

"Part-time" employees. Every time I checked fares from PHX to MFR the fare that Mesa charged were out of this world, as much as $600 more than DL or UA.

Not going to happen. LAS will be losing a LOT of flights.

What you see of US Airways in Las Vegas today is not what you are going to be seeing a year from now. US Airways a while back spoke openly about a reduction, a rather large reduction of about 40 some flights, and moving the late night bank up to around 9pm. The days of flying planes to fill in the schedule are done. Now it is all about the money. A thin route like MFR-LAS was bound to be axed at some point or another.

However, for the flights that remain, it may allow increased tickets, while not fun to pay for, may help with the cost of flying.

Can I have a mojito on this flight?

I know.

I just seems like a lot for 2 flights a day, even when factoring in days off, etc.

When I worked for Mesa, stations of this size had somewhere around 5-10 employees max., with *maybe* 1 or 2 that were FT (usually the station manager).

Do not pass me just to slow down...

Most times during a turn there is about 4-5 and for the RON there is 2 emp. at night. I think the only time I've seen them all there is when they work a Sun Country flight, but not all 20, I doubt there are that many employed. side note QX has about that though for people, between full and part-timer's.

What kind of service does Sun Country have at MFR?

Is there any business draw to speak of? My grandparent have 11 beautiful acres just outside of Grants Pass, and I love the Rogue River (though it has been a couple years) plus the Oreagon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland... But I've always gotten the impression that virtually all of the traffic up there is leasure (and therefore lower loads with higher price sensitivity).

My grandfather also kept his personal aircraft at MFR before he retired (self-employed insurance adjuster) and gave up flying.

The drive between MFR and either SFO and PDX wasn't terrible, as I remember it, and if you can get a nonstop flight out of either of those, the saving in cost may be worth a slight time premium (especially for the aforementioned price-sensative leasure traveler) -- for example, a 1-hour flight, and a 1 1/2 hour connection = 2 1/2 hours -- so the real time cost in PDX or SFO is only 1/2 hour to 1 1/2 hours, and that's ignoring the risk of delay.

The US LAS reduction that was announced I think happens Aug19. Night flights mostly eliminated and cities that remain will have departure times late evening is what I think I noticed when I checked this out last week.

Well, it's about 6 hours from MFR to each of those cities, so I guess it depends on your definition of "terrible."

Also, driving through the Siskyous (sp?) on the way to SFO can be interesting during the winter.

As for the loads, when I worked for YV (as UAX), the load factors on United flights out of there were always sky high. I realize that doesn't always mean high yield, but the demand was certainly there.
