I've been looking at fares for USA-India in the December peak season for the past few weeks. Everything so far has been upwards of $2000. Though, I see a very reasonable fare for the AI flight out of EWR. Orbitz shows this flight to be operated by a 744. The exact routing is EWR-CDG-BOM. Does anyone know whether it's one of the refurbished 744s ? or whatsthatname? - rust bucket?

I've seen AI planes in both ORD and EWR. I've never been aboard one, but I don't think you will be dealing with a "rust bucket". I always wondered, if the cabin smelled like curry. My experience was having an Indian girlfriend while stationed in England and ate a lot of Indian food. If you eat Mexican food, the green sauce is also hot, but about ten times hotter with Indian food. I've had Indian beer and it's good, but if you aren't used to Indian food, chase it with milk. Even if you are on what you consider a "rust bucket" the service will probably make up for flying on an ugly plane.

'Rustbuckets' was a term applied by one OP to the four 777-200's that were leased by AI. These A/C were previously operated by UA and had been stored in the desert for sometime. Somehow this term has caught on in the aviation world.

Most of the 744's currently operating are owned by AI. Having said that only two of them have been refurbished. The remaining have limited IFE and old cabins. Your chances of getting on one of these A/C is high.

On the other hand if you can fly from JFK, Air India offers nonstop flights to both BOM & DEL with brand new product on their brand new A/C. The feedback about these services has been very positive. There are also a few trip reports in obviously the trip reports section that will give you a better feedback.

I am aware of the nonstop services from JFK. Unfortunately, the desirable fare is available only out of EWR.  Sad

Are there absolutely no plans to upgrade the remaining 4 744s?

I've been on this flight but 2 years ago. The 744 was refurbished and in sparkling condition. I'm sure you'll have a great flight, unless AI runs out of pilots on that day.

No they are refurbished aircrafts. Till march 30th 2008 they actually had the brand new B777-300ER on this route!
