Any Update On The DTW North Terminal?

I have been doing some searching to come up with the answer, but no luck.

Is the North Terminal @ DTW still on schedule to open on Sept. 17, 2008? I am thinking of catching a WN flight on the 18th or 19th to check out the new terminal and take my first flight on WN.

I haven't heard that it is scheduled to open on 9.17.

Keep in mind projects of this magnitue are notorous for pushing back the opening so don't be in the least bit surprised if the date were to slip by a few or two at the 11th hour.

Otherwise, construction is progressing very well. Most of the jetbridges have been installed. The concourse has been powered-up with electricity. They are currently finishing up the concessionary & vendor areas within the concourse.

The check-in terminal still has a decent amount of work to be completed. They are working on the bridge to the parking garage and installing the canopies over the roadway.

Articles appear in the local papers about every other week. Search at www.detnews.com or www.freep.com and you may find some more info.

That gantt chart was produced a few years ago at the start of the project.

At the time Phase II was to include the potential for expansion on the southern end of the new terminal once the Smith terminal was demolished. Right now there is no need for future expansion as there will be vacant gates when the facility opens.

Phase II work though will include the following:
-Tearing down the concourses on the Smith (the terminal building will remain for the time being since it houses airport administration offices)
-Ramp work where the concourses used to stand
-Installation of the the 2 remaining jetbridges where C concourse on the Smith currently sits in the gate footprint
-Expansion of the deicing pad where the Smith Concourses A & B used to stand

Eventually the Berry & Smith terminal building will be torn down but there is no set date yet.

And the emergency backup control tower. They won't keep the building for that however I can recall not that many years ago that they had to reactivate the "Smith Tower" because of a problem in the new one. PSU.DTW.SCE do you recall this as well?

Yep, they did go back to using the Smith terminal for a few weeks a couple years ago. A bunch of the controllers had been reporting they were feeling ill. As it turns out, there was a black mold problem in the new tower, in the elevator shaft. While they were removing the mold, the controllers used the old tower.
