9W(Jet) Launches BOM-PVG-SFO

Jet launches Mumbai-Shanghai-San Francisco flight.

Anyone have info. on initial loads? Indian carriers have 14 weekly fifth freedom rights to NA. With Jet announcing plans to fly to LAX via MXP, it leaves YVR as the only choice for Jet, unless it considers Seattle.

Quotes:
Jet Airways on Saturday launched its daily Mumbai-Shanghai-San Francisco flight, becoming the first Indian private carrier to operate to China.

The airline's executive director Saroj Datta launched the flight from Mumbai early in the morning. This is the fourth long-haul route started by Jet Airways to North America in less than a year.

Will PVG become a hub for flights to all West Coast destinations? YVR and LAX could probably sustain service, even if it isn't daily.

More info. from SFO source.
http://www.insidebayarea.com/sanmateocountytimes/localnews/ci_9579845

Quotes:
"The launch will be almost 95 percent full," said Zainul Aljunied, vice president of the Americas for Jet Airways. It represents the second flight from SFO to Shanghai. United Airlines also flies the route. The special introductory round-trip fare, including fuel surcharges, is $1,480.

The new 20-hour direct service is expected to cut off at least five hours of travel time compared with current ways of flying to India. Passengers will have one flight number and travel in the same airplane. Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines currently handle much of the traffic between SFO and India.

The airline will depart SFO daily at 8:45 p.m. and arrive at Shanghai at 1:30 a.m. After a two-hour stop in Shanghai, it will depart at 3:30 a.m. and arrive at Mumbai at 8:20 a.m.

The return flight departs Mumbai at 11:15 a.m. and lands in Shanghai at 7:45 p.m. After a two-hour stopover, it departs Shanghai at 9:45 p.m. and arrives at SFO at 6:15 p.m. the same day.

Are they gonna turn MXP and PVG into hubs also to make them like BRU? BRU for East Coast North America, PVG for West Coast North America? Also why go through MXP to get to LAX when BRU, which is not so far away, is already their hub, or do they want to also open Italy to India then continuing on to LAX?

9W 210 is running about 2 hours late into SFO. They will use Gate A7 for their arrival. ETA: 1955. Will the sun be out for the water salute? More important, will there be enough light for our A.net photographers  Smile

BRU isn't able to handle any more flights at the times that Jet wants to use the airport for its scissor operations, hence, they're looking at MXP. Also, with Alitalia winding down operations at MXP, Jet is probably looking at all of those wealthy Italian business people who may be "enticed" to fly on Jet to the US in the higher yielding front cabins.

It's a good thing I didn't go spotting, otherwise I would have been a bit annoyed given that it would have been sunset and I wouldn't have been able to take any decent photos...  relieved

I thought it was 2014, by my watch  Wink

Before heading to work, I stopped by "The Park" and spotted about a half dozzen A.netter. I was glad to see half of them had their cameras ready for the touch down. There was quite a fog bank heading over San Bruno Mountain and I was sure the sun would set behind it before the aircraft arrived.

There was a water cannon salute as the aircraft approached Gate A-7. A couple of cars parked on the ramp approach to the Terminal snapping a few pictures.

I met a few of the crew. They look sharp in their yellow jackets and black slacks. It was an all female cabin crew except for one male. I noticed their were a couple of PRC crew. This makes sense since it stopps off in Shanghai before heading over the Pacific. I wanted to ask them about the delay but I did not want to sour the moment.

The check in area was very festive. They had balloons at all the check in areas and large banners welcoming their inaugeral flight.

Here is wishing them sucess on this new service.

The flight was delayed from BOM for more than an hour I suppose due to bad weather/heavy rains. The aircraft arrived in PVG an hour later than the scheduled time. But thereafter no track of as to how the delay went upto 2 hrs.

The idea of pax transiting through BOM International-International is almost unimaginable at this point.

9W 227 (BRU-BOM) reaches BOM at 2330.
9W 210 (BOM-PVG) leaves BOM at 1115.

This isn't horrible as many domestic passengers traveling to remote corners of the country end up waiting all night for their flights. If someone really, really, really wants to fly Jet Airways I guess they can do it!

No, the connections are awful in each direction! BRU - BOM arrives in BOM at 1130pm whilst BOM - PVG departs at 1115am! On the return, PVG - BOM arrived in BOM at 825am whilst BOM - BRU departs at 210am!

I agree. I am far from a photography experst and do not even own a camera worthy of posting on this website. Plus, I was running a little late for work  Wink

I am sure we will see a few over the next few days. There were at least three people with exceptional cameras.

Even if connectiohns were good, BRU-BOM-PVR wouldn't be an attractive connecting option. It's more than 30% further (about 1500 nm) than connections via AMS/FRA/CDG etc.

Is there any demand for Bombay to Mexico?

Is Puerto Vallarta a fuel stop en route to Mexico City?

It was a typo, it is PVG and not PVR, just check what the thread is actually about.

They're well on their way to becoming another mega-giant airline, but for some reason I still get excited when I hear about 9W's growth. I remember flying them in 1995 and 1997 on their good old 737s. It's hard to believe the same airline that gave me handwritten boarding passes now almost entirely circles the world.
