I was wondering when airlines decide on their schedules for next summer? Will it be this Fall/Winter? Where can one seem them first usually?

Pure speculation, but can anyone with knowledge of NW ops predict/say that NW will be flying the 744 to AMS next summer? I know there is plenty of variables that could axe this aircraft on the route, namely JET A.

Also I wonder about whether or not the KL 617/618 flight will still be around for next summer. It looks bookable up until May, but as mentioned a lot of things can happen in the next 9 months.

Typically, the schedule is not firmed up until October / November for the following summer. Anything in there at this time is merely "placeholder" or a default schedule, often the same as what it is this summer in order to accomodate advanced bookings. However, since we are in a significant downturn and the industry in crisis mode, it is very possible the timeframe for schedule finalization could compress. With the current uncertainty in the cost of fuel, scheduling planning times are getting further compressed.

Nope, with no certainty whatsoever could anyone predict whether the 744 and/or KLM will be on one of the DTW-AMS frequencies next summer. This summer, due to A330's being used to operate new routes like PDX-AMS, SEA-LHR, MSP-CDG, a 744 & KLM were necessary to backfill flights on DTW-AMS.

The use of the 744 & KLM will depend upon:
1) fuel costs
2) projected passenger demand
3) any further cuts/additions/reallocation of the A330 fleet
4) pending merger with DL, changes to route network, and potential fleet reallocation
5) allocation of the 744 fleet.

Short answer - who knows at this point in time.
