Yesterday (June 16) FedEx sent an MD-11 (N579FE) from Memphis to Manchester, NH operating as Flight 9090. Today, about 24 hours later, the MD-11 departed back for Memphis...again operating as Flight 9090. It was probably empty coming in and certainly empty going back because she used only half of the short runway here (Runway 24 is 7,650 feet long).
I'm theorizing some work needed to be done with respect to the new HUD that all FedEx planes will have. That system is built by Kollsman, in nearby Merrimack, NH.
The other thought is that they sent the plane here to familiarize the local ground staff at MHT about the MD-11. That seems a little less plausible than the first possibility, as there's really no need for FedEx to use the MD-11 here; the A300 and MD-10 are fine for the routine IND-MHT-BOS and MEM-MHT-MEM runs they make here.

Or BAe's anti-missle system, which also may have local roots?

Doing some tests on the new HUD, you got it.
