Sounds there is the "sacrificial lamb" working local control for arrivals, and the departures that are currently in line. There is also a ground controller working inbounds only; outbounds are NOT leaving the ramp.

just heard it on JFK ground, 2 controllers up here when there's normally 8 (a supervisor and a senior controller) due to a 'fire in the tower'.

Ground controller said the fire is out in the floor below, tower may have to evacuate all personnel to vent out the tower.

G/C said a normal op may start in 30 mins or so.

Looking at the airport diagram, I'm inclined to say no.

Redwood 230 just got a clearence to SFO, so op's might be resuming shortly.

Actually it sounded like they had; the Ground controller mentioned that those guys that are staffing the backup tower (no clue where) should start to return to the real tower...

Ground is beginning to crank clearances out again...

We landed 22L while this was going on. Everything was at a standstill. Our clearance was to "taxi to the ramp" We were the only ones moving on the whole airport. They were still departing 13R but only the planes that had made it out that far before the ground controllers stopped all outbound flights.

I'm certain that they'll schedule the next fire at a time that is more convenient to you.  Smile

Hope the damage was minor. That tower is relatively young in age.
