Why doesn't China Airlines fly to LHR? It is such an important hub and it is the no 1 gateway to Europe. Will they ever do so?

Did they ever fly the LHR? If yes when was that and why did they stop?

Don't you mean "Why doesn't China Airlines fly to LHR?"
I don't think there is a huge amount of demand to TPE. BA offer TPE via HKG with CX and Eva Air fly LHR-BKK-TPE.
BA dropped their TPE flights a while back so the demand is probably just not there.

You mean, why do they NOT fly to Heathrow? I guess it's because EVA Air does and that probably because there's only one Taiwanese carrier designated (by the RoC government) to fly to London.

Maybe if this changes, they might do so, but that would probably require a bilateral approval from the UK. BA (or to be exact, British Asia Airways) used to fly to TPE, but gave it up - and now flies via HKG and codeshares with CX.

EVA has licence on the UK- Taipei run.
China Airlines only regular flights into the UK are Freight to Manchester and their Main European destination is Amsterdam.

This is all long standing politics between Mainland China and Formosa me thinks

They do not have the rights to serve London Heathrow because EVA has it.

The same reason also applies to Paris CDG. EVA dropped the passenger routes but would not give up the cargo routes, which makes it impossible for CAL to take over as the agreement between Taiwan and France is passenger and cargo movements to be appointed to one airline of each side only. I don't like how EVA does it... they simply strip the passenger rights for direct flight and they won't hand the piece to CAL. Maybe they are waiting for fifth freedom via Shanghai Pudong (and hope France will agree to it as well)?

For UK carriers, Taipei may be a low yield destination, but London is not a low yield destination for Taiwanese carriers.

I had understood BA dropped TPE as part of a political agreement to give it broader access to Beijing and Shanghai (and the rest of china), although it is true yields were not the best on the network.

As BA technically has rights alongside EVA, then the chinese government effectively understood by "encouraging" BA to drop TPE, no one else could enter the route until a UK carries (defiantly) exercised their legal right
