Quoting ScrubbsYWG (Reply 1): pardon my ignorance, but doesn't the fact both are in star do the same kind of thing? Or are there some details that don't quite pan out the same?
Don't quote me on this, but I think that they are still required to have a formal codeshare agreement in place to codeshare on flights. Being part of Star only gives them the benefit of booking you on another Star carrier with that carrier's flight number. Also the obvious passenger amenties such as lounges and frequent flier miles for other Star flights.
