Lets jump forward about twenty years of so. The early build 787 aircraft are ready to be parted out. On traditional aircraft the aluminum can be recycled but what about the carbon fibre? What do you do with it and does it pose a bio-harzard or end up in a landfill? I'm hoping that the manufacturers have taken end of life issues into account when designing the new plastic planes.

You can grind it up and use it for filler in a variety of things.

It's basically inert, once the resin has set and, as long as the fibers stay encapsulated, it's not much of a hazard. You could throw it in a landfill...it would just sit there pretty much forever, I suspect.

Both Airbus and Boeing have active programs for recycling end-of-life aircraft. I'd be pretty surprised if they're not including their newest models.

Tom.

Im really concern about that as well. To take it a step further we have far more cars than carbon aircraft and they are quickly turning hybrid. What will we do with all the batteries?

Will someone please wake me up in 4 years
