I acknowledge that there are from time to time threads relating to the need, perceived or otherwise for a '2nd' airport in the Sydney area (IE one capable of taking jets on an RPT basis).
However, prompted by an intersting statement by the Mayor of Baulkham Hills, I would like to discuss the viability of Richmond RAAF base for RPT operations in the near/medium term.
Snippet taken from todays Aviation section of The Australian Newspaper;
"A SYDNEY council is lobbying the federal Government to open the Richmond RAAF base to commercial traffic.
Baulkham Hills Shire Council made a submission to the government aviation review supporting opening the base for aircraft as big as Boeing 767s. Mayor Sonya Phillips said the northwest sub-region contained a growing population with a high percentage of professional people and business managers who regularly used air travel."
I was a little surprised to read of a local counciller promoting the idea of expanding the use of the airport site? Is it not surrounded by housing estates? I am not really familiar with the layout of the local area - it's been 15 years since I've been there.
So, my question is, what would it require to see Richmond RAAF approved for RPT commercial ops? Who would use it (both airlines and travellers?)? Pros & Cons?
2nd Sydney airport was discussed in the attached recent thread, however Richmond was scantly discussed, people seemingly focussing on Bankstown and Badgery's Creek.
