Was wondering if anyone saw the atlas air 747 over Melbourne CBD this Saturday (5/7/8) at about 12noon. It was flying quite low over the CBD, seemed to be going over flinders st / yarra river. People in the street stopped to look up and lots of people were wondering why it was so low and not where you normally see any jet traffic.. Anyone know why this plane was flying on such an unusual track and pretty low on a fine weather day?

I have seen a number of Atlas aircraft around the place using Qantas call signs, from memory they have the contract with QF for their fright aircraft.
Maybe they were doing an approach onto runway 27/34 at MEL ? Most 27 approaches go over Epping NDB, and the Wendy arrival will take you over the city at 2100 ft for runway 27.
The Badgr, Boyse, Lizzi, Waren arrivals for 34 will take you over a waypoint called SHEED (near the city) at 2500 ft, over Essendon and then for runway 34.

I just had a look at the airservices charts for those arrivals and they all seem to go over essendon airport, which is a good 15k from the CBD.. So they would have to be a fair way off track to be where they were.. Not a biggie really.. just was wondering if anyone else saw it and thought it was a bit out of place..

I saw it today (Sunday 6/JUL/08) whilst riding my bike near the Westgate bridge. Same flight path. It passed over the top of me. Don't usually see them this far south.

Its not unusual anymore, Emirates regularly takes the same track from Auckland ....have a look for them circa 7.30pm, also when there's congestion, traffic from Sydney and Tasmania can get directed overhead as well.
