Couldn't FJ reorganise their fleet so operate at least 1 daylight MEL/NAN instead of red eye, either by parking 763 overnight at MEL or substitute a 744, freeing up the 763 for other routes.
Always thought FJ should operate NAN/YVR/NAN nonstop like NZ do with a 777.
Apparently many Australians (esp those not from SYD) use NZ to fly to YVR avoiding U.S. ports.

Quoting ANstar (Reply 1): LAX traffic must not be doing so well. NZ dropped their NAN-LAX services in favour of codesharing on FJ.
and now FJ still have to reduce frequency!
NZ used to operate 763's but FJ replaced 763's with 744's, which might be too much capacity.
Perhaps FJ would be better using their 763 on NAN/LAX/NAN 2 or 3 days a week, freeing up 744 for other routes.
(always better to have daily service than 5 or 6 times a week).
Often QF frequent flyers wanting to go to & from USA get pushed onto FJ services (codeshared with QF, people often don't notice until they actually get on aircraft).

NAN-LAX is definatly in the leisure route path rather than premium but daily service would give them better connections from BNE/MEL/SYD/AKL. At 458 seats per 744 thats a fair bit of capacity though.
They only have 1 763 and running it to LAX 3x weekly would fully utilize it except 1 day which would be for maintanence anyway. I thought when they got the 744s they could have instead gone for a couple more 763s say 3 giving a total of 4.

By dropping to a 767 though they lose precious cargo money. Should be interesting to see how this pans out.

Flew LAX-NAN-BNE 3 weeks ago. LAX-NAN was 70% full on the 744, and NAN-BNE about 80% full on the once weekly 763 service.
Interestingly, you can't pre-assign seats in the upperdeck (economy) on the LAX route- only done at check-in. If flight load isn't full enough, no cabin crew are assigned upstairs and that cabin is blocked from use.

this makes sense & less cleaning as well, howevere they would be better off filling their aircraft.
Why not do some seats auctions, with fixed dates on ebay / graysonline ??? they could start at say AUD$500+taxes (with say a large change of date fee for return say $250 or more. Better than have seats go empty+they get the fuel surcharge !!!
They would know the average stay in USA of leisure travellers for certain time of year. Say it was 3 weeks. they could offer 4 week itineraries, that way, people might go for it, in that the extra stay accom could be paid for with the savings on air !!!
Air NZ have grab a seat, this would just be a variation on this.
FJ have a problem in that u can often get cheap seats NAN/LAX or LAX/NAN but not between NAN & OZ or OZ & NAN, which seems to imply that short haul from OZ is selling well, but long haul isn't, so they should definitely look at putting 763 on at least 1 service a week to LAX & putting 747 in place of 767 on domestic route to OZ, altho how will this work with crew change at LAX ?
Could same crew that operates NAN/LAX operate LAX/NAN with a 12 hour break ?
Ie. have NAN/LAX flight depart NAN earlier say 2000 instead of 2230, which means arrival into LAX about 1030 & then depart LAX at 2359 for NAN, which would actually provide a better connection to SYD &/or BNE for pax not stopping at NAN.
