Starting August 1st, Aerorepublica will start its second daily frecuency between Cali and Panama.
Departure from CLO will be at 8:53 am, returning from PTY at 7:08 pm. With this flight, frecuencies between both cities will be three per day, since Copa leaves at 7:30 am and P5's other flight leaves at 6:00 pm.
When I heard about P5 request for a new frecuency to PTY, I thought they will schedule departure to that city around noon (I have to say that I do not know if Copa has the corresponding bank of flights in the afternoon for conecting purposes). However, as you can see they schedule it right after Copa's departure.
The only reason I can think of, is that Copa feels it can feed more passengers to the morning bank from CLO, hence the need to support its current 737-700 operation with P5 metal.

Copa used to operate 2 main banks in PTY: one in the mid-morning and the other one in the late afternoon. Since June2007, these two banks were expanded further in order to create 4 banks, which essentially are the same original two: the first one in the early morning, the second in the mid to late morning, the third one in late afternoon, and the fourth one in the early evening. Bottom-line: the same two big banks remain - one morning and one afternoon.
Aeropublica's flights from Colombia to Panama don't make sense if they are not timed to feed these banks. A noon flight would be out of the question.
I honestly don't see what the fuss is all about. In fact, Copa/Aerorepublica took too long to start the 3rd daily CLO-PTY flight. The 5th daily BOG-PTY and the 3rd daily MDE-PTY have been operating for quite a while now. August 1st seems to be a very late launch date; they basically missed half or more of the high season travelers.
