Dear Northwest Airlines,
It's seems hard to believe it's been 34 years since the first time i set foot on one of your planes, at the tender age of 6, on the way to see Grandma and Grandpa in far off Washington State, now, you're about to get get hitched to that Atlanta Belle and change your name to DEL....Looking back through the years I think of all the milestones passed on the NWA, and frankly, it blows me away:
Age 6-Flew on my first ever DC-10, Minneapolis-Spokane for the 1974 world's fair. I remember the green plaid seats, most of them with reserved placards on them, i also remember seeing an ad on the back of the Northwest Orient magazine where McDonnell Douglas was urging travelers to tell their travel agents they want to be booked on the DC-10. the plane had a very slow takeoff roll, lifted off and we pointed straight to the starts, it seemed that way anyway.
Age 17-Flew on my first 747. Minneapolis-London Gatwick as part of a high school tour to europe. the plane, an ex-National bird, N620US, still had the upper deck lounge, i remember this because the cabin crew announced it was open, only for first and business class passengers. i thought that a bit unfair. A member of the group wanted to see the lounge and was told quite sternly by an old battleaxe of a flight attendant that the lounge was only for first and business class passengers, she could see it when we were on the ground in London. I understand protecting the privelege of the premium classes, but she could have been nicer about it! instead she just huffed back behind the curtains.
the 8 hour flight, my longest ever, was even longer with a one hour delay thanks to local thunderstorms knocking out the power to the airport, so preventing the plane from being fueled. I was just mindblown by the size of the plane, like many first time 747 flyers i just could not believe this plane could get airborne. It could and it did. and I hated it. Maybe thanks to the service on Northwest Orient, wherein we were kept awake all night, or maybe it was my disappointment that the movie "North by Northwest" had nothing to do with airplanes. I dubbed the plane the "Transatlantic Torture Chamber" of course 23 years and 24 747s later, i'm a convert.
In my 20s i flew on my first A320. N306US. I was flying from Denver to DC to see my dad over spring break, i was supposed to fly via Memphis and get on an ex-republic MD-80. the memphis flight was canceled so i was routed via Detroit instead on the dreaded DC-9. From my seat assignment, i assumed i'd be on a 727, ho hum. I hung around the gate, and when my plane turned into the gate i exploded with excitement, you'd have thought the Broncos had won the superbowl the way i reacted, laughing, pumping my fist. I think the elderly couple nearby thought i had lost my mind, i've never been so excited in my life.
In 1995 I flew Northwest to Albany for my brother's wedding. I also flew on my first DC-9-50 and my only documented Northwest DC-10.
Finally, in 2006, i flew revenue business class for the first time, logging a ride on the 747-400 prototype from Tokyo-Hong Kong and my first A330 from seoul-tokyo.
Thanks old girl, for so many memories, mostly good, a few bad (like being stranded in Chicago for the first time during a trip to Indianapolis in the mid 90s.)
So, anyone else care to share their special memories of Northwest?

My first trip to the States was on a NW DC10 in June 1991 from GLA to BOS and then down to MCO. I really can't remember if it was a DC9 or 727. Coming back we had a 757 up to BOS and the DC10 back to GLA.
I'll never forget it since it was my first trip to the States. A few years later NW pulled out of GLA and we now use CO on the 757 to come over to your great country.

I've never flown NW , but I've spent (and still do) many happy hours at AMS spotting all those beautiful NW 742's, 744's DC10's and a330's taking off and landing. I was sad that the DC10's left NW, because I was always excited when I saw one approaching the runway. . Too bad that in a couple of years, it will all be DL planes. I have nothing against DL, but I will miss the NW c/s at AMS.

I've flown a NW DC-10-40, A320, 757, and DC-9 to MCO, SAN, DCA, and diverted to RSW and DTW on NW. The only bad experience I had on NW was the long wait in a DC-9 at DTW.
Its not a question of if an Air France 773 will be at MSP, its just a question of when.

I crossed the Atlantic about 60 times, about 40 times flying on Northwest birds B742, B744, A333, A332, DC10-30, B752. Too bad the Red Tails will be gone soon. I have always had great time flying Northwest. These folks have always taken care of me and for that I always was a loyal customer.
Well, my little A330, see you next week on 23rd of July in FRA. You will take my wife and me to DTW

I always loved the name NORTHWEST ORIENT. I was sad to see the ORIENT go, it gave the airline a sense of prestige and an air of mystery. The the LBO of KLM and Al Checci in the late 1980's, NW suffered from investment in the fleet. The bright side for me is NW/DL will create a strong third airline at LHR with service to ATL, JFK, DTW, MSP and SEA.

My first flight was on a Northwest Orient 747-100 in 1982 and my last Northwest 747-400 flight was probably today onboard N662US from HKG-NRT. Living not too from from DTW, most of my flying has been from DTW and many of the flights were on NW. I too really don't want to see the red tails disappear from DTW but there isn't much we're going to do about it at this point. We're about to lose another airline into history much like TWA or Pan Am. Thanks Northwest for the many great memories.

I've only flown NW once and it was MDW-DTW-MCO a few years ago (DC-9s and 757s) I must say it was a nice experience once we were in the air. My flights between DTW-MCO had weather delays. I'm flying them once more in September. I have to go to Pennsylvania for the weekend and since I'll be away at school its gonna be Airlink all the way MLI-MSP-MDT and MDT-DTW-MLI

There's just something about those damn DC-9s. They stink, their seats are harder than rocks, but you hear the engines spool up and you know you're experiencing history, and that maybe this will be the last time you have that special feeling on an airplane. There's just nothing like it.
And then there was my first and only DC-10 flight, AMS-BOM, I remember looking up at the lights and thinking they were a mile away. Who needs PTVs anyway? And besides, who else flies mainline to AZO? Thank you NW, for the great times and bad. I still can't believe that that red tail is going to disappear. It just doesn't seem right.

I, too have sentimental value with NW. My first TATL flight ever, in 1996, was with NW/KL. Loved the 747 and the great service at the time. NW also took me to Asia for the first time a few years back.
I still love flying NW internationally (haven't ever flown them domestic) due to their nice new A330s, and their excellent website. I also enjoy the little touches, such as printed menus and complimentary drinks. NW has a ton of international experience and it shows. I hope DL takes the good from NW (the great technology and website, AVOD, nice international interiors, etc.) and makes it even better.

My first ever NW flight was on a DC-10-30 doing MSP-SEA in 1st Class. Since then Ive been on the DC-9-30s twice and an A320 once. A few days ago, I managed to fly on one of the Embraer 175s. NICE ride...

I will be sad to see NW go. It is my favorite. I fly on NWA almost exclusivly. I love the DC-9. I have flown on DC-9s more than any other type of plane. First with Ozark, then with TWA, and finally with NW. I have flown on every plane in the current NW book. I just got to fly on a 744 to AMS two days ago. I always considered Pan Am, TWA, and NW the three traditional flag carriers in the USA. It is sad that we will now have lost all three.

Most of the earliest flights for me were on Northwest Orient, as my mother and father were transplants from St. Paul living in San Francisco. My first flight came when I was 5 months old, though from LAX to MSP (I don't know what type of aircraft it was; maybe I'll ask my father about it). I remember many times arriving at SFO, hoping to see a DC-10 at our gate, and feeling the disappointment whenever it proved to be a 727 instead. Shortly after the DC-10s were recertified after the ORD crash, we flew SFO-MSP on one, and it was nearly empty- I don't know whether it was just a slow day or if people were actively avoiding them at that point. The competition on the SFO-MSP route during those years came from Western- my father couldn't stand them, calling them the "Crumbum Airline." No idea why he felt that way.
Later on Republic came along and we flew them as often as NW much to my displeasure, as the best we could hope for with RC was a 727. One time RC cancelled our flight MSP-SFO, and we were rerouted MSP-SLC-RNO-OAK on a DC-9, which I thoroughly enjoyed. But of the two, I always preferred NW.
My first 747 ride was on Northwest Orient as well, SFO-HNL. I remember sitting in my window seat (I was six at the time), and writing a note to the Captain asking to see the cockpit. The stewardess was very friendly and promised to pass my note to the Captain, who granted me a tour upon arrival at HNL. Exciting times for a youngster! Our return cancelled and we were given the choice of returning to SFO via United or Pan Am. We chose United and their 747, and were treated to a bouncy ride home. Being so young I feared the worst during the turbulence- when we finally broke out of the clouds and touched down smoothly in SFO I figured that the Pilots had saved my life that day, and from then on I wanted to be an airline pilot.
Over the years my opportunities fo fly NW have decreased as I have moved around the country, pursuing an airline career of my own. Luckily I was able to pilot my old favorite for a while, the DC-10, though in a cargo configuration with Gemini Air Cargo. I'm now flying another type found in the Northwest fleet, the A320, though our tails are blue rather than red. It is not going to feel right though visiting MSP in the future and seeing Delta dominant; I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling that way!

northwest was my first plane ride ever. Routings were YWG-MSP-DTW-MIA and back. They were air miles tickets, so we had to get creative on itineraries. I was going on a cruise with my then girlfriends family throughout the Caribbean. I was in university at the time studying to become a mechanical engineer. I don't remember heck of a lot about northwest to be specific, but i remember seeing these that amazed me as an engineer to be. The fact planes could be built and designed to flex constantly, and then i saw the TRs on a DC9 deploy and thought it was the coolest mechanism ever!
Counties I've visited: France, England, Monaco, Ireland, USA, Bahamas

My first flight was also on Northwest. MHT-DTW-SJC. The impressive WorldGateway and the ease of use of nwa.com are why they continue to be one of the first places I look when I need to fly. In a way NW is responsible for my interest in aviation. I still need to fly their A330, especially before any new paint jobs.

I remember having done that routing in reverse once, on a DC-9-15. What a ride! On the way back I did MSP-Pierre-CPR-SLC-OAK on Western, with the SLC-OAK portion on the then-new 737-300, N3301.
