The MD-11, Is This The End?

With both Swissair and the China Airlines incident fresh in our minds we ask ourselves if the MD-11 is safe? As it stands now Swissair 111 was brought down due to electrical problems, at this time whitnesses say that the CAL MD-11 also reported fire in the cockpit and may have been brought down for the same reason.
The pilot in many cases had no right to bring the airplane down in Tropical Storm conditions, but if he hadn't then many more people could have died.
At this point the MD-11 is a safe aircraft to fly, but within the comming weeks more info may come out and MD-11's could be grounded due to faulty electrical wiring. If this is the case then Airbus and Boeing need to be on thier toes because i am sure one of them if not both use some of the same techniques as the MD-11.

It should be the end.

McDonnell Douglus aircraft aren't the best aircraft I hear storys about them. A friend of mine flys on DC-10 alot and they always have problems with the plane.

thanks,

The MD11 has an appalling record, there have also been unreported fires on the ground during maintenence in Lower 41 (the electronics bay). The plane is difficult on landing, with a very severe tendency to pitch-up and be laterally unstable. It is this characteristic that (I think) caused the crash at Hong Kong last night - any other plane would not have flipped right over. This is an exact repeat of the FedEx MD11 crash at Newark, and if the fire story is true then it is also shades of SR111.

I don't think the plane should actually be grounded, but I will certainly avoid the type from now on. I don;t think the DC10 is half as bad, by comparison it's flying characteristics are very docile, it is considered a "pilot's aircraft" and is very forgiving, very stable. If UA232 had happened to an MD11 it would have spiralled out of the sky within a few horrible minutes and no-one would have survived, the plane has negligable inherent stability, at least none at low speed.

The MD-11 is certainly an airworthy aircraft. The failures of the -11 are in the passenger models, the plane not having good enough range and fuel burn. This is why Singapore cancelled their orders for MD-11 in early 90's, and going for the 340's instead. It just was not economical for PAX use, the 777 and 330/340 being better. As a freighter, the plane will be used for decades to come. Fedex thinks so, as it is buying AA and SR -11's to convert into freighters. They will have to remove the insulation when converting, anyway.

I agree that the MD11 is an airworthy aircraft and fulfills criteria for operations, and is probably safer than (for instance) the Il62. But problems have not just been restricted to passenger operations - only a couple of months ago a Korean Air MD11F crashed a few minutes after take-off in Shanghai, killing the crew and 30 people on the ground.

How can you say the MD-11 has an appalling record when it is one of the best records, certainly at least now before we find out what caused the CAL crash. FYI, the MD-11 is indeed a pilot's aircraft and the pitch up characteristic upon landing is easy to avoid. And unless something new that I'm not aware of has been found out, I thought the KAL crash was more likely to have been caused by something in the cargo than the plane itself.

The Fedex crash is a totally diffrent situation then CAL's crash. It's problem was with the nose landing gear I heard. Be thankful your flying a DC-10, you'll be doing yourself a favor. How would you know that the UA232 crash if it was a MD-11, would have spiralled out of the sky and crash with no surviors, did you simulate that? I think not.

I still would fly the MD-11. As a pilot and a passanger.

I think Lufthansa Cargo will get some more. FedEx, too.
