Are the service standards of these two airlines equivalent to each other? Does Continental offer a more sophisticate product, generally speaking?

Continental offers a very high quality of service compared to Northwest's deteriorating service level...

Two totally different service levels from two totally different airlines...

I agree completely with AWA 320. After flying on a lot of Northwest flights, including international flights to Tokyo and Singapore, I just rediscovered Continental this summer, and there is no comparison. Continental is far superior in every way.

I concurr with the other two posters: Continental is better. I flew Continental from San Francisco to Honolulu two years ago (on a very nice, well-maintained DC-10) and was surprised with the quality of the service.

However, I don't think Northwest has BAD service. Just last week I flew Northwest for the first time(s). Four flights in four days on four different planes (DC-10, A320, DC-9, and 757). The service was average, not terrific, but not atrocious.

I don't have any experience with Continental because they only fly recently out of AMS but Northwest has some of the worst service standards of all Airlines I ever flew. Even Olympic Airways of Greece is better.

Once I was on a terribly aged NWA DC10 flying from BOS to AMS and NWA forgot to take enough food on its plane. Second problem they had was that the movie lasted to long for the flight???????(+/- 6hrs) So the movie was still running when the plane was at the gate. And that all with a delay of about 2,5 hrs.
NWA staff even didn't say they were sorry.

This was my worst experience flying NWA, but the other experiences I had with NWA were not that good too.
To make a long point short. There is no airline in the world with such bad service as NWA.

When you want service simply fly an NON-US airline

Hey now, Tripple7, there's no reason to be biased against an airline simply because it is American. I've received Excellent service on Continental, United, and Southwest. Although the best flight crew I've ever experienced WAS from a non-US airline (Luftansa)

As a KLM frequent flier, I sometimes had the "pleasure" to find a NW plane at the gate of flight "KL8XXX"... so I flew their DC-10 from AMS to BOS, the 744 from AMS to DTW and back etc. next to some US domestic flights which were uneventful and neither bad nor good.

I only try to avoid flying NW on the longhaul sectors now.... when we flew last time AMS-BOS, we had reserved seats right in the front part of the Eco cabin. A fat lady was sitting there and didn't want to move - when we called the steward the result was that he placed US in the last row, where we didn't even have a choice of meal (because the people in front of us ate everything >:-/ )

On the return flight from Detroit to AMS with NW's 747-400, the cabin crew needed 2 hours (!!!) to serve the first beverage and 3 hours before we received dinner - shortly before passing Greenland at night.....

So bottomline : NWA never again...
