Indonesia: Online Booking Impossible?

I am going to Indonesia in a month and it seems to be impossible to book a domestic flight online. Its not working at Garuda and Lion Air, not available at Merpati and also the flight shedule seems to change on a weekly basis. The flights which I have found on different airlines for one sector have mostly changed. At Mandala they even dont list UPG anymore in their destinations. Despite being on the route map and some weeks ago they showed a flight option even with a price.

What the hell is going on there?

Anyone here with an idea where to check the different shedules and fares?

thanks!

Congrats! you've just found out that internet booking is not the rule worldwide and that Indonesia is part of the countries where it is definitely not the rule!
You'll have to go to Garuda's list of agents worldwide, there definitely are some in Austria.
Cheers

Mandala no longer flies to UPG. You should be able to book at Lion Air and Air Asia, although the latter does only fly UPG KUL. Other than that, it is indeed a sad affair over here.

If you're not in a hurry when you get to Indonesia, I would wait and book the ticket there. Provided the flights are not completely full, last minute fares booked in Indonesia are often a lot cheaper than anything booked in an overseas Garuda office. When it comes to UPG, there are quite a few choices, either non-stop or via Surabaya, so getting a seat shouldn't be a problem.

Mandala have dropped UPG a year ago.
Mandala is bookable online, but they don't fly to UPG...
Lion is bookable online.

If you want, send me instant message and I'll book it for you.

Wanna go CGK UPG?
Sriwijaya (732), Lion (M80, M90, 733/4/9) and Batavia (733/4, 319/320) do CGK-UPG and CGK-SUB-UPG
Though the favourite here is to go by Express (732) CGK-UPG... small decent and reliable airline...

Merpati's schedule are odd, but they do fly the route.

XN with its ancient 732s is indeed great CGK-UPG as Mandala499 mentioned. I posted a trip report about UPG-CGK on them a while ago in the trip reports forum.

By the way, does anyone know whether any airline still flies directly MDC-DVO ? I think Merpati used to, but I can't find any references to it online.

I'm also going to Indonesia in a couple months, so I might as well utilize the wonderful expertise of airliners.net. Does anyone knows which cities is served by Bandung airport? I know Merpati serves Bandung; is Trigana, or Dirgantara still fly out there? I'm interested in going to Central Java. Or maybe I should take the train instead?

Are you going to Yogyakarta ? I took the train (first class is cheap) which is very comfortable adn offers great sights along the way. You even get served food (you have to pay though I think, can' t remember). I don't think there is an airservice between the two cities though I could be mistaken. Both are great and fun and friendly cities !
To Surabaya I did fly from BDO, using Merpati (flight continues to DPS).
From Bandung flights to jakarta, Surabaya, denpasar, Bantam, KUL (Air Asia)...and I am sure other cities that i don't know about. (Check Visa requirement if arriving from KUL though).

Yes, that was Buraq, but they ceased operations long ago. They were the only one as far as I know.

Macc,
Yeah, they were probably trying to reopen the route with more 32Xs planned, but they decided last week to can the 734s, so they pulled it out of the res again.
---
XN is a nice small neat airline... always enjoyed flying them!
---
MDC-DVO was last operated by Sriwijaya last year on a semi-charter, it has since been dropped.
Bouraq flew that route until they dropped it, Merpati took over then it was dropped... this was before SJ took the route... and also dropped it. Dunno why people are so obsessed about this route. Crew who used to fly those routes said it was a dismal route, but nice crew allowances. The times when the routes were full are very far inbetween.
---
Mul,
Bandung is served by:
Sriwijaya: SUB
AK/QZ: KUL
MZ: SUB-DPS

Halim-Bandung flights are now down to Dirgantara or Deraya, can't remember. Since the opening of the Jakarta-Bandung highway, all flights between the two ceased but this Halim-BDO-Cirebon-Semarang flight (I think).

If you want to go Bandung-Central Java, go take the highway back to Jakarta and grab a flight... LOL... Trigana's Bandung-Jog-Semarang-God knows where else have stopped over a year ago.

Bandung airport is getting a terminal revamp and runway overlay... so there should be some new services next year.

Thanks for the replies. I'd prefer to fly out from Bandung rather than drive to Jakarta, which means I have to leave at least 4 hours prior to flight, and crossing my finger for getting there on time barring any traffic jam. Last time I did that, I got stuck at the toll road, with 90 minutes left to catch my flight on Eva Air. So far I'm planing my trip to, in no particular order, HKG, SIN, CGK, BDO, SUB, BPN, SRG, SOC, JOG, SRI.
Is there flight from JOG - BDO; Merpati website seems to indicate so, but I'm not sure how up to date their web site is. It'd be nice to have a wiki-page feature here to list flight schedule in country that does not have online central reservation system.

When I was living in Yogya back in 2006, there was a flight from Yogya to Bandung. I think it was 3 times a week. The travel agent said you had to be careful though because the situation would change from week to week. In the end I drove on my motorbike instead. It was only about 6hr30mins, but that was going fast.

You could always get the train. If I'm not mistaken it leaves Bandung in the late afternoon and gets into Yogya in the small hours. I think it is only about 100,000Rp for Executive.

Oh for the early morning daily Bouraq flight the Yogya from BDO and the "ever delightful" HS748.

Haven't seen anything on that particular topic here before. But on behalf on any fellow questioners, sorry for the "obsession"!  Smile Perhaps it is because I saw Merpati at DVO relatively recently, and was just curious about the viability of a direct flight between two non-capital cities of Philippines and Indo. Imagine the convenience and time saved on a circle itinerary compared with flying via Manila and/or Jakarta. Seems like the Davao-Manado route is an old legacy line that has been operated for a long time by various carriers.

But in the meantime, I guess SilkAir and now even Cebu Pacific offer such direct connections as DVO-SIN, DVO-HKG which will make me forego Indonesia for now (not to mention from CEB). So I can continue exploring without passing thru MNL or JKT!  Smile

Guys,
I'd avoid Merpati for the next few months. It could close down at anytime. Salaries are now being paid in 2 installments per month... signs that it's in huge trouble. The govt. may pull their funding.

Macc,
Xpress don't have a site unfortunately. Their clientelle don't have internet... *grin*

Mul,
I drove from the airport to Bandung the other day, 2 hrs... on a Sunday... what to avoid is going Jakarta-Bandung by land on Friday afternoon/saturday morning and Bandung-Jakarta on Sunday afternoon... it can add a few hours to the journey on those periods. Apart from that, it should be good. If going Bandung-CGK airport, avoid going through the down-town, even in the toll ring road, go via the north side of the ring road.

To do your trip... go into CGK, do BDO by land, then go to BDO-SUB by plane (SJ)... you can then go backtrack to SRG (SJ) or JOG (JT)... (if JOG then do JOGSRGJOG by land) JOGSOCJOG by land... then take JOG-BPN (RI)

SRI is where?

From BPN, you can leave to HKG/SIN from either of CGK/SUB.

MarcoPoloWorld,
Well, unfortunately, MDC-DVO doesn't make money for anyone anymore. It's not like the old Bouraq days unfortunately. Traffic between Indo and Philly is just a bit low and only now CGK-MNL is becoming a feasible route for PR. Btw, the "obsession" is for the airline people in Indo... *grin*
