NEW ORLEANS -- A Continental flight carrying seven members of congress made an emergency landing in New Orleans, according to KPRC in Houston, Texas.
The station reported that the flight, bound from Houston to Washington, D.C. had a cabin pressure problem during which oxygen masks dropped. The plane did a sharp dive and landed.

I was on an AA MadDog a couple of years ago that de-pressurized. I figured we were somewhere over Arkansas, and was pretty sure my vacation was about to be derailed. We continued on to DFW, I made my connection to HNL, and had a great vacation (who wouldn't in Hawaii?)
Does anyone have any numbers on how often this sort of thing happens? I'd think it would be very rare.

Definitely routine. Typical media over-blowing the issue although the fact they were flying back to D.C. to vote on an airline safety bill surely helped to further the media's cause to make more of this than it should be.

The ironic part of all this is that the seven congressmen on board were trying to get back to Washington DC in time for a Tuesday night vote on an aviation safety bill according to this article

Glad it was okay, but I gotta say though that if an aircraft I was on suddenly depressurised I'm afraid the last thing on my mind would be a derailed/ruined holiday, lol!!!

Your point is well taken, but my concerns for my safety were short-lived. Once I understood what was going on I was confident that I wasn't in any danger. When I plan a vacation that has me flying half way around the world to one of the most beautiful places on earth I prefer that nothing happen to mess it up. It's just a thing I have.
