Question About SkyMiles Medallion Membership

Okay, this is confusing me, but I'll try to do my best to ask the question clearly:

I have a buddy that's about to go Silver with Delta. Woohoo, I know.

But, here's the question:
If I book him on a Continental flight, what is he entitled to?
As a SkyTeam elite, will he have access to space available upgrades?
Will he get the 25% bonus miles that Delta would give him? (I find this one odd- Continental gives 50% to their own members, while Delta only gives 25%. Yet, flying Delta will earn you 25% toward Continental, but the other way around seems to earn nothing, from what I can glean on Delta's very frustrating website).

Anyhow, I think that's my question.
I'll rephrase for clarity:
What does a SkyMiles Silver Medallion member get when traveling CO?

I'd book him on Delta, but we're talking HUNDREDS of dollars difference.

Its on the website, just hidden.
http://www.delta.com/skymiles/about_...calculations/index.jsp#continental

As a Delta FO (Silver) he can only get upgrades on Delta metal.

First off it depends on his fare as to how the MQMS are caculated for CO flights, see below

First or Business A, C, J, Z, D 500 x 1.5 750
Coach/Economy Y, H 500 x 1.5 750
Coach/Economy (discounted) K, N, B, V, U, O, M 500 x 1 500
Coach/Economy (deeply-discounted) Q, I, S, W, T, X, L 500 x 0.5 250

Now when it comes to regular miles and FO bonus miles those are caculated at the following
http://www.delta.com/skymiles/ways_t...artners/airline_partners/index.jsp

Continental offers:10

Economy Class: 500 miles minimum or actual miles flown, whichever is greater
Business Class: 150% of mileage
First Class: 150% of mileage

So he will get full regular miles, and the 25% bonus regardless of fare type, however his MQMS on CO depend on the fare class purchased.

As a Silver Medallion SkyMiles member, I have been upgraded from coach to Clase Premier in AM-ticketed and AM-operated flights as well, so it seems to me it is not only in DL-metal where this benefit can be had.

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

No. Only NW and CO elites are entitled to these. DL elites can only get complimentary upgrades on Delta and Aeromexico.

Yes - you get your elite tier bonus miles on any SkyTeam operated flight.

EliteAccess boarding pass (priority boarding, security, check-in) and priority seating - my DL Medallion number has always been instantly recognized on Continental's website, so you should be able to grab the premium (blue) seats. CO treats exit rows differently than DL - only OnePass Gold and Platinum (maybe NW WorldPerks Gold/Plat too) can reserve these in advance. At 24 hours out, these seats open up and you can grab them at that point.

Thank you, everyone, for your very helpful answers.
When it comes time to book the tickets (hopefully within the next couple of days), I will call this thread back up to keep my (his) tail covered, and the miles pouring in.

Living in Alaska has pros and cons- expensive to get out, but VERY EASY to go elite with any carrier!

FB Gold and Plat can get those in advance too. It comes in pretty handy on the TATL 757 flights...  Wink

How about upgrades for DL elites when flying AF? I don't know why I had the impression that was possible too.

Never had that happen to me when I fly on Continental and I always book the deeply discounted coach ticket and always recieve 100% MQMs. It really comes in handy when doing transcon and intl. flight if you want elite status really quick. Sad to see Continental leaving SkyTeam, tho.

That would make AF's own Flying Blue elite members very unhappy as they're not entitled to upgrades on AF. I'm not aware of any major Europrean carriers that permit free upgrades for even their own elite members except on a very limited basis. For example, the LH/LX Miles & More program gives Senator members (gold equivalent) 2 free upgrades each time their Senator status is renewed.

Czech Airlines (not the most major European carrier, but still...) allows for Golds and Platinums to have complimentary upgrades on flights.

You're pretty lucky there. I've had several CO flights where I've only gotten the 50% MQMs - fortunately, they were all short flights and since I don't fly CO metal all that much, it was not a huge loss.

The bigger loss for me will be the loss of the President's Clubs, especially at LAS. If I do move out to LAS, I might just need to buy a PC membership (or go with Priority Pass...).

NW and DL FF members only get 50% elite qualifying miles on deeply discounted CO fares. If you got 100%, it was a mistake. These include Q,I,S,W,T,X,L CO fares. It's not like this is some sort of mystery as it is documented on NW and DL websites.
