Hello A-netters,

Wondering if anyone out there has any info on a runway incursion/near miss that occured this morning (7/26/08) at SEA? A friend of mine was on AA324 when they aborted take-off and slammed on the brakes to avoid a collision with a SWA B737 that had taxiied across the departure runway after landing. I don't see anything on A-net, or online on any of the newspapers. After an inspection of the aircraft (brakes) the B757 continued on to STL.

Wondering if anyone had any more details.

That would make it a near hit or near collision then. Or if we want to avoid the confusion, I'd stick to runway incursion.

at a little after 10:00 into that clip you'll hear the AA flight get cleared into position and hold 16L. Then there is a controller shift change. Then AA is cleared for takeoff 16L Then controller tells Southwest landing 16C to cross 16L at N. Then you hear American "aborting." Then after a few more transmissions from the first controller the other controller takes over again....

Hmmm......oops!

Thanks for the link - very interesting listening. A couple things struck me as odd: The second controller doesn't seem remotely aware that she issued conflicting orders to the Southwest and American planes. Also, she doesn't even react (other than saying "Roger') when AA324 aborts the takeoff.

Good thing it was clear and dry today!

I would imagine at that point she likely realized what she'd done and the "I'm going to pee my pants" feeling over what I've just done had set in. (Much like the passengers aboard AA324 were feeling). Maybe she was seeing her career flash before her eyes and that's all she could muster.

Anyway. Many thanks (again) for the ATC link.

The second controller either was a developmental on local control and the first was her instructor because when he took the position again he sounded a bit shook up at the incident....or she was relieving him and while he was still familar with the traffic situations the supervisor had him return to his previous position after the incursion took place.

Odd that the SWA flight told to cross at "N" did not question the crossing clearance with the AAL flight starting take-off roll.....guess they didn't look too closely at the approach end of the runway and trusted the controller! I can't imagine a pilot ever trusting a controller! Big grin

Funny the things you hear totally unexpected...the non flying ASA493 F/O is an acquaintance of mine so he had a front row seat almost.

There was a near miss at SEA earlier in July. A NW A332 to LHR almost collided with a Air Tran 737-700. The A332 came within 400 feet of the 737-700. Crazy!!
