Baggage System Snafu Delays American Airlines Flights From JFK

POSTED: 9:44 am EDT July 30, 2008
UPDATED: 10:48 am EDT July 30, 2008

NEW YORK -- American Airlines said its baggage system at John F. Kennedy International Airport is not functioning – forcing security officials to manually screen bags.

A spokesman for the airline, Tim Wagner, said a conveyor belt in the bag room is not working properly. About 20 flights have been delayed by an hour to an hour and a half, Wagner said.

Other flights have taken off without baggage.

Meantime, the Transportation Security Administration, or TSA, is sorting bags manually.

The airline is announcing the issue to passengers and those who don’t want to fly without their luggage can wait for another flight.

American said that once the issue is resolved, the bags that are left behind will be sent on their way to the customer's destination and delivered to him or her.

Heard that too this morning, it was 'breaking news"

Will AA collect fees?

The luggage system has been a DISASTER since day one. This is an on-going problem since it was installed.

My partner says that 95 flights are affected and Op's looks like a boarding room. FA's laying around waiting for ok's to go to plane!

It gets better, but at least they are doing something:

While software issues happen, the AAirline should have also refunded any luggage fees associated.

I watched the AP video and I believe they said that the baggage fees were not charged.

Looks like a fairly typical US Airways Baggage Service Office to me...Oh, this is AA? And at the checkin counters? Amazing!

Not to hijack the thread, but why is it that -every- airport I've flown to where US is in whatever terminal I've arrived in, you can tell the location of US baggage service office by the giant pile of suitcases overflowing from their Baggage Servie Office? Sure other airlines occassionally have "extras", but US is the only airline I've seen have that large a volume of "extra" luggage that consistantly.

Why did you drop the Mastercard reference, worried someone might pull a Tim Russert if/when the same thing were to happen to DL at JFK?

You know, this can happen to any airline. What matters is how the airline handles it. I was at JFK and there were 3 news vans standing by for the evening broadcast. Do we really need three channels dedicating 15-30 minutes to this story when there more important things at stake? (Like I want to be able to take water through security once again. And a 16 oz toothpaste, just in case.

AA should charge storage fees since passengers didn't pick baggages in a timely manner upon arrival.

They were not charged. Furthermore most of these were International Bags....so there was no charge anyway.. They only charged Domestic coach passengers to check bags....and if and only if they are not Premium Travelers.

Never mind local news, CNN had a whole analysis last night. Give me a break..slow news day.
