I was watching the Astros @ Cubs game on ESPN, rained out and they said there are tornado warnings in the area....must be pretty serious!

So far the best response I've heard from ATC was:
"I've got the best view of anyone here at the airport and I'm not going anywhere."
... tornado warnings both north and south of the field .. I don't blame him, though, I wouldn't leave the tower for anything either.

Thanks for the update. Tuning in right now. Good thing JM does not have a flight arriving there tonight. She would be in for a diversion/delay.

I heard the sirens going off so me and granny headed to the basement with flashlights. It got very bad out here and there was an unbelievable light show outside. My grandfather got stuck driving outside and had to pull over. I called some co-workers at ORD and they told me everything had stopped and US had really long lines for re-bookings.

We got a few of the ORD diversions here in MSN, but mostly domestic stuff. Most of the international arrivals were probably on the ground before the weather went downhill.

Both ORD and MDW have to be a mess right now. I was on my back balcony watching the line approach and about 10 minutes before all hell broke loose, I saw two WN flights book it off of 4L headed east over my house. I wish I had my camera out, the sight of the 737 departing with lightning not too far behind was pretty impressive.

I was out walking the dog and saw a 747 fly over the area and was wondering what was coming in as tonight isn't a regularly scheduled 747 night. Here's what I found:

Everyone is having horrible time today in the area. At one point the national ATC coordinators said that they were only able to land 15 aircraft during a certain hour at ORD with a ground stop the hour before and the hour after so very few planes were making it in or out. Good luck to all those agents in the Chicago region, you have your work cut out for you.

Let me put it to you this way, I usually am not bothered by storms, but this one scared the hell out of me. Around 7:00 or so I was heading home from the grocery store and it was pouring. The sky was a very eerie greenish-black and I could've sworn that I saw a dark cloud fall out of the sky. Then as if it was even possible, it began to rain harder and I could not see anything on the road, other than the rain and the constant flashing of the lightning. I live out near Elgin and was listening to the Cubs game and it was not raining yet by the lake front. After a few minutes, I could not hear the announcers due to the rain pounding my car, the crashes of thunder and the tornado sirens going off. It was a crazy night and thankfully I didn't have to fly tonight.

I work in Evanston but live in Kenosha. I got home ahead of the weather and was just leaving dinner with a friend when the weather was rolling through.
Since I wasn't here at the time, I've been listening to the LiveATC ORD archives starting at 19:00 local (00:00Z) for the past few minutes. I've already heard a number of compliments passed the way of the ATC folks (in particular the Chicago TRACON folks).
Its good listening if you get the chance.
FWIW....up here just north of the Cheddar Curtain, we got a little bit of rain but a pretty good light show around 20:00 local.
Hope all our A.net friends in and around Chicagoland are doing ok tonight. ComEd was reporting 200,000 without power.

At least the Cubs lost [/soxfanism]
This was seriously one of the more interesting weather experiences I've had. I caught the channel 9 news talking to folks at ORD and it looked like a mess. There were at least 2 different tornado cells (one of which I think went right over my house in the south subs). I didn't look like MDW took it as hard.....obviously plenty of canceled flights but I think the heavy stuff went around it.

A new cell has developed north of Downtown Chicago and is starting to move over ORD now (11:00pm CDT) Its severe again.
I'm here in Chicago on vacation. Never before have I seen storms like this. When the tornado warning was issued earlier everyone at O'Hare were apparantly brought down to the baggage claim areas and tunnel...

Wow. ORD is right smack in the middle of a cell and no one is on approach. Plenty of flights circling to the NW near the WI-IL border. I wonder when/if they'll start diverting soon to places like MKE, RFD, MSN, or GRR.

My grandparents have lived in Chicago for close to 40 years and have never heard tornado sirens before until tonight. I heard it with my air conditioner on. I went outside and said "granny, what is that"?? The neighborhood started to clear as everyone went inside. I turned on the radio and heard reports of funnel clouds and one just 8-10 miles from where I lived. The thunder was like something I never heard before so I knew something was up. But luckily there are no reports of touch downs. Fox News Chicago said winds got up to 70-90 miles an hour. The sirens were going all over the city!
Now a month and a half ago we had a tornado touch down in the south suburbs of Chicago and then this tonigh. That is two strikes hahahaha. Chicago has had a couple of strike across the bow this summer! I think the big one is coming. I always think the worst!

Would ORD have so many WX delays if we all drove hybrids?
All joking aside I cant imagine the mess ORD, MDW, and the rest of the local controlling agencies have on their hands right now. These storms are just popping out of no ware and I'm seeing diverts to places all over the area. It even looks like GYY got action today.
Also if anyone have been watching the marathon known as the Cubs game, its good watching when the storms rolled through. Video of the sirens going off as the players leave the field is almost surreal.

What a/c were diverted? Any UAL mainline? Diversions always provide some excitement! I have to say though, I am SOOOOO glad I took today off!!! 5 of our 8 ORD flights were XXLD. I can only image the headache my coworkers faced!

I was talking to a number of people here at work this morning that were saying much the same thing.
The city took a lot of heat for a storm last August when the sirens weren't sounded (A storm that pretty much left Wilmette and parts of Evanston looking like a war zone). The emergency management folks claimed that the tornado warning was issued for "Cook County" and not the city.
The National Weather Service, as I recall, pretty much called them on it and said, "Uhhh, dude... Chicago is in Cook County last time I checked."
So, the city may have been a bit quicker on the trigger finger this time.
