While not earth shattering news, it appears Cathay Pacific wants to get in on the growth in the Vietnam market. Currently the route is flown twice daily by VN A321 that are only code shared with Cathay Pacific. Hopefully this works well for Dragonair and Cathay Pacific.

I remember flying this route on a CX A343. Using that type on a 1,5h flight was abuse indeed, so two A321s a day (plus the new one) seem more sensible.

Certainly a KA A320 is much more suited to the 500 mile route...

Finally,
This is good news. In the current situation the tickets to HKG from HAN are so overpriced.
I have been looking to airfares for some time now and the prices are somewhere between 600 and 800USD for a return ticket. Way to much for a 1.5hour flight.
Besides the 2 daily VN A321, Hong Kong airlines also flies this route daily with a 738.

Heck UA flies a 744 to HoChiMin and Hanoi is North of there. I think the A321 is perfect. Anything bigger would cause the route to lose money.
I mean according to UA ops pages for SGN, the 744 goes out so light that they get a special EICAS warning and the FMC always gives them a FMC V1 below the minimum V1 UA has set for the 744. So I can't imagine Hanoi would be much different. The A321 will be great for this route, anything bigger would not make money and anything smaller would probably be to small.

VN flies two daily A321 (which currently CX runs a code share on), but KA (and essentially CX) will fly a daily A320....
