6 Of 24 Gates At DTW North Terminal Will Be Empty

As you might imagine with the state of the airline industry there will be empty gates for quite some time when the new north terminal at DTW opens September 17th. This will also mean less gate rental income for DTW.

The article makes a reference to Champion Air which obviously has to be a mistake.

Room To Grow At Metro Airport: New Terminal Feeling Empty
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

• Spirit Airlines is cutting its presence from six gates at the Smith to two at the new terminal. It also will use one shared gate for its international flights.

• US Airways will lease three gates at the North Terminal, down from five at Smith.

• American Airlines is shrinking from six gates to two.

• Southwest Airlines is shedding one gate, from four to three.

• United Airlines, which also handles gate and ground operations for Air Canada in Detroit, is going from three gates to two.

• AirTran Airways is dropping from two gates to one.

I find it hard to believe AA can operate with only two gates at DTW - because they have morning flights to all three of their hubs. Also, it's been a LONG time since AA actually used six gates at DTW - they have sub leased much of their space on the B to other airlines for many years.

Will CO make the move to join their fellow Star airlines once the exit is official from Skyteam? The use 3 gates on B and 1 gate on C at the moment at the World Gateway.

AA1221 to DFW at 6:00
AA4877 to LGA at 6:15 (Eagle)
AA1137 to ORD at 6:50
AA2297 to MIA at 7:20

The departure times are well spaced to allow the use of only 2 gates. The aircrafts for these flights sleep at DTW so two (MIA and ORD) will have to wait at a remote stand for the gate to be free.

So AA basically only needs one gate for DFW, the other for ORD, while Eagle's 5xLGA get to used whatever is free and MIA with its late arrival/early departure.

I am really surprised to see NK shrinking so drastically. Though if they schedule correct the could run a slew of flights out of just 2 gates. Now would be a good time for B6 to come in with the possible merger between NW and DL and all the hassles the merger will create, B6 could do well.

6 of 24 empty seems reasonable to me. Although many airlines are decreasing their presense, it seems you'd want to build any new terminal to be bigger than current demand for future expansion. Don't want to built a new terminal and then be immediately out of gates and have to turn down new airlines and the like. The north terminal will be 75% occupied, that seems like nice figure for a brand new opening terminal with room to expand.

Would make sense for them to move back to be closer to UA. I'm sure NW will push them out once they've left Skyteam.

The thing about that is this, AA is probably going to spend the same amount to rent these 2 gates at the North Terminal as it would cost them to rent the 6 gates or whatever the number is at the Smith Terminal. They don't want a huge increase in the cost of the gate rental just to move to the new terminal so they will make due with two gates. Seems pretty smart to me.

I think you will start to see more and more of this as airlines and airports can not have airlines sitting on gates for the sake of keeping out airlines and airlines in this economy can not afford to pay for items they do not need to remain or even turn a profit.

Like most other airports, they will park on remote stands as stated above. AA has two gates here in OKC, and normally has 2-3 aircraft parked on remote stands overnighting in addition to 2 at the gate.

checkmark  I'd look for CO to shrink at DTW, though, so they likely won't need 4 gates.

Some of the airlines cutting back on gates I am not surprised on. About 3 years ago when I was doing research on the north terminal project at Embry Riddle I had talked to some WCAA officials that said which gates would be exclusive use and who would be using them. Back then they said Southwest was going from 4 at Smith to 3 at North. I asked back then why and the response I got was that Southwest believed they could use 3 gates more efficiently in the North Terminal than they currently were at Smith.

What really surprises me is Spirit cutting back all those gates. Originally I had heard that Spirit wanted to use 8 of the gates. Are they cutting back that much at DTW?

This is a GOOD thing. Building extra capacity into a system is a way to extend the life of that system.

I can see CO moving back to the new North Terminal. NW/DL and the skyteam will not allow them to stay at the WorldCenter. Also, I was reading that LH, Royal Jordian will be using gates at the new North Terminal. As they are either with Oneworld or Start.

And don't forget USA3000. They move over to. Their is talk of destroying the Berry Terminal and moving everything from their to the new North Terminal. So I don't think those 6 gates will be sitting their empty for long. As for CO cutting back in DTW. They have done that. They will not be serving CLE from DTW any longer. But, that was before they started talking about getting out of the "Skyteam" group. And NK has been saying all along that they would be cutting back on the number of flights out of DTW. They have already moved their pilot/Flight Attendent base out of DTW to FLL or LGA.

The article is incorrect.

AA has signed a long-term lease for 3 gates.
