My contacts with most international scheduled carriers into YVR confirmed that they will not be using the B747 into YVR starting early 2009, and very likely there will be no more B747 appearing in YVR on a scheduled bases by the end of next year !!
CX will replace all its B747 with B777 by early 2009, CI has already replaced its B747 with A340, while BR has a few B747 flights now operated by B777, and is considering full B777 operations. JL is expected to replace part of the NRT-YVR-MEX schedule with B777, and may opts for all B777 operations by end of 2009. BA has too replaced a number of flights with B777 already and too may opts for B777 year round. SQ indicated that they may not use B747 during peak season and will keep using B777 year round, and the same apply to LH.
B747 could become a rare bird at YVR by end of 2009 !! Too bad, so sad.

BA is not switching the B747-400.

KE is also switching its 777 from YVR to YYZ, and 744 from YYZ to YVR.

So KE and BA.

You've used the words 'likely', 'considering', 'expected', 'may', 'indicated' and 'could'.

You might use the same words about the likelihood of San Franciso suffering a major earthquake in 2009.

Not exactly 100% then  Wink .

Doesn't a Cathay freighter serve Vancouver?

The current BA On-line Timetable that BA claim is valid until 9 July 2009 shows a double daily 744 LHR-YVR service for the current Summer Schedules. This reduces to a single daily 744 flight for the Winter 2008-09 schedule from late October. From the end of next March the double daily 744 service is restored. I can find no sign of a BA LHR-YVR 772 flight at all.

I would not be terribly surprised if BA occasionally substituted a 772 for a 744 on this route due to the 772's lower fuel consumption per passenger. However I have checked flights BA085 and BA087, the double-daily flights in question. For every day last month (July 2008) these services were operated by a 744.

Cant see BA replacing 2x daily 744 (in summer) with 777's until she is well on the way out of service - in which case we will see whatever new widebody they will have at that time - 77W / A350 or even A380.

They have used the 77E year round for the last 3 years.

LH use the A343 in winter & A346 in summer, also for the last three years (since Ive been here). Maybe the 346 will be upgraded to a 748I in the summer  Wink

There are rumours about CX Cargo dropping YVR, though personally I cant see it happening. All the while they stick around, we'll see 747's. In fullness of time, maybe ERF's and 8F's.

Very interesting, I hadnt heard that. I suppose if they cant increase frequency due to bilaterals, they increase capacity.

Certainly agree we wont see 747's from JL or BR much longer.

When did SQ ever fly a 747-400 to Vancouver? At least in recent years?

Correct, they used to use the 300 before the arrival of the 77E - I have a YVR DVD from 2001 and they are still using the 743 then. There has also been the occasional SQ Cargo 744F diversion, but they were always diversions, never scheduled or even chartered.

I think he meant on other routes, so its would be a possibility to YVR too - which I disagreed with. Of course, in 5-10 years time when the 744's are retired its inevitable this will happen - wouldnt be surprised to see a 77W / A3510 & A380 in summer.

The question has been asked about SQ, but when was the last time LH regularly used the 744 over the 340 variant to YVR?

The nice thing about a mistake is the pleasure it gives others.

The Lufthansa B744 is now the high yield aircraft of choice for LH. It has a large number of F and J seats.

The Canadian market is best served with a high density airplane (i.e. A340-600/B777-300).

Speaking of the Korea-Canada BiLateral, was there supposed to be a new agreement finalized in June?

Yes, which may depend if DE and LT stick around, but currently the 346 is the best aircraft. I was thinking like 5-10 years time when the 343's & 744's were gone from the LH fleet - and more like wishful thinking from a spotters point of view that we may see a regular 748I here, hence the  Wink

And the DC-10-30 prior to that. That was their inaugural type when they started service to YVR (then with a stop at YYC).
