I know it happens often on a seasonal basis, but one of AA's daily DFW-LHR flights is being downgraded from a 777 to a 763 in October.

What is the reasoning behind this downgrade? I guess I'm just curious as to where AA flies the extra 777.

I think it's not only to free up one 777 but also for operational reasons. With the winter season LHR-RDU and daylight LHR-BOS will also be downgraded to 763. As LHR was operated exclusively with 777, AA could swap aircrafts among routes to make a better use of the lkimited slots at LHR.

Now, there'll be a mix of 763 and 777 operating at LHR and downgrade one LHR-DFW might make sense from the aircrafts rotations point of view.

Makes sense, esp. with lower demand in the fall & winter. I'm just curious as to the routes where AA is using the extra 777s.

South? It makes sense to increase capacity during peak seasons. Europe in summer (April-October) and Lat-Am also in summer (November-March)

Postdata: MAD-MIA will be upgraded to a 777 so you have one new destination for these aircrafts.

This is just part of a larger re-allocation of AA’s 777 and 763 resources starting this winter.

BOS-LHR (x2), DFW-LHR (x1) and RDU-LHR are all permanently downgraded to 763’s.

MIA-MAD, DFW-GRU, DFW-EZE and MIA-GRU (x2 additional flights for a total of 3 flights) are all permanently upgraded to 777’s.

MIA-SCL will be seasonally upgraded to 777 for the northern winter.

ORD-LHR will be reduced to 3x daily instead of 4x daily for the winter, while MIA-LHR will get some additional frequencies for winter.

It looks like the economy and the further weakening of the dollar vs. Euro has hurt DFW-London traffic. Even with the new wealth of connection opportunities via LHR the BA flight between DFW-LHR actually lost pax between '07 (LGW) and '08 (LHR).

Sort of confusing the way I explained it but according to DFW's website the BA flight carried less pax during April and May of 2008 than it did in the same months in 2007. I thought that moving over to LHR would increase pax demand on the DFW-LHR leg as you can get virtually anywhere via LHR.

I am not sure how the AA flight did during those months but if AA is downgrading one of the flights to a 763 something must be on the downturn. Not good news.

You have three routes downgraded to 763's.

2 BOS-LHR
1 DFW-LHR
1 RDU-LHR

4 planes total

You have four routes being upgraded to 777's.

1 MIA-MAD
1 DFW-GRU
1 DFW-EZE
1 MIA-SCL

4 planes total

Once ORD-PEK begins, the 777 will be taken off MIA-SCL.

I also expect that DFW-EZE will be a 763 again at some point.

DFW-GRU and MIA-MAD are 777's for good though.

That should clear things up.

One of the DFW-LHR flights has been a 763 for quite a while. I fly JFK-LHR all the time, at least 6x a month, and there is always an AA 763 from DFW when my flight arrives in the morning.

Does that mean that there will be no F on the 767?

Correct. AA only has J/Y on their 763s.
