PRC Aircraft Landing In TPE -- Question

Prior to the start of official cross-straight flights, would a PRC-flagged aircraft have been allowed to land at TPE (or another Taiwan airport).

I seem to remember some instances of pilots defecting from the PRC, and landing aircraft in Taiwan, but I'm thinking of "normal" commercial operations.

For example, a flight from PEK to SYD/BNE/AKL ... all three of these routes have the potential to go slightly north of TPE if they follow the Great Circle route.

In the event of a medical or other emergency, would a PRC-flagged aircraft have requested/been granted permission to land at a Taiwan airport (TPE or KHH most likely)? Has it ever happened? Or would the pilots have flown to HKG?

Well, it never happened AFAIK, but given that the ROC and PRC allowed each other's planes into their respective airspaces when they started economic cooperations (for lack of a better term), I don't think it would have been a problem. Just some security clearances upon landing before anything else is allowed to happen, I'd guess (so I think Naha or Hong Kong would be more convenient).

Tritons rule. CI rocks.

There were various instances of hijacking of aircraft from BOTH sides of the straight in the 80s and 90s, tho more often of mainland aircraft. These resulted in aircraft of the one side of the straight being flown to the other side and landed. These were emergency situations and were dealt with as exceptions.

Aviation safety's website has full details.

They still come through HK FIR both ways. And EVA and CAL's european flights still go via Bangkok - although they are allowed to overfly mainland China as far as I know - please correct if i'm wrong (freighters?).

So again as far as I know the only flights by aircraft of either side traversing airspace of the other side are those cross straight flights, although they still come through via HK FIR.

Both TWN PAX and freight flights are allowed to cross PRC airspace -- BR used to fly TPE - CDG through PRC airspace.

Thanks for the information Cloudyapple -- I figured the flights would be routed to HKG rather than through TWN airspace, but I was still curious.
