A car hit a plane that was trying to take off on I-40 near Needles in Southern California. The plane was about "3 feet" off the ground and was trying to take off when the car hit it, killing the pilot.

The plane apparently was "experimental".

I'm not sure how the car doesn't miss a plane, but maybe it was night time?

It happened in the daytime, around 8:00 a.m. according to the California Highway Patrol officer interviewed in the video

Wow. Thanks for the video. Looks like the car got the best of things there, but then I guess that would be expected given that the aircraft didn't look much more substantial than a glider with an engine.

Considering the driver was probably traveling at about 80 mph; and the reaction time for the driver was nil when the "plane" came into sight.

So I am lost as to how on "takeoff" this airplane hit a car. If it was an emergency landing, I understand. But, takeoff, wouldn't the police have shut down the freeway when he landed? I feel like I am missing something.

One mile of highway gets you one mile, one mile of runway gets you anywhere.

That just means it was a kit or a one-off plane. SpaceShip one was an experimental aircraft. I believe the Dreamlifter may still be considered an experimental aircraft. The 787 will be as well, for its first few flights.

I beleive it will be experimental until it receives it's certificate....not for the first 'few flights'

Usually when im driving down the road im watching the road and other drivers and not particularly looking for airplanes that may enter the roadway area...

And I thought today would be a slow news day. I suppose this will be in next week's "News of the Weird".

The aircraft (a Titan Tornado II) is listed in the Light Sport Category with a gross weight of 1,000 lbs. N3156B was registered to an owner in Bullhead City, Arizona.

Still unanswered is why he chose to land into oncoming traffic on Interstate 40, about 10 miles west of Needles, Ca.

I wasn't sure how many test flights the first airframe would have to make until the FAA issued its certificate.

This is usually the case. The police will shut down a portion of the roadway so the plane can take off safely.
What may have happened is that the plane made an emergency landing, then the pilot may have inspected the a/c and found nothing wrong. So the pilot may have just tried to take off again without notifying anyone.

I would say three feet pretty much brings the plane to eye level. Driver could have been texting or changing the radio or doing something else like drivers always do.

That's not what happened according to the highway patrol officer interviewed in the video.

According to him, they received calls around 8:00 a.m. that a plane was having engine trouble over the Highway 40/95 interchange. The plane was flying southbound over Highway 95, then made a left turn traveling eastbound over Highway 40. The left wing dipped down and struck the ground, then bounced back up about 3-4 feet and was T-boned by the white Ford.

It sounds to me like the pilot might have been trying to make an emergency landing within a few minutes after having taken off from Needles and the story incorrectly reported it as crashing while trying to take off.

I think this is another bad news reporting again.
Since when did I-95 north intersect I-40..

I realize U.S. 95 crosses I-40 but you would think an L.A. reporter would catch this.

Ha....what am I thinking...

Condolences to the pilots family.

May the pilot rest in peace. Prayers to the family. Sounds like a driver from Knoxville. Everyone that drives around here seems to be paralyzed from the neck up.
