I think I already got the answer to this question in my last post, but just in case, back in 1993-1994 during gym class, ( I went to Westchester High School of course) I remember seeing a UA 747sp taking off around 1200 or 0100 PM almost everday. I was wondering what was some of UA 747sp routes from LAX in the 1993-1994 time line?

That was a flight to GIG or GRU that UA operated at that time.

I miss the 747sp it was such a cute plane, that is if a plane that size can be "cute".

The 747SP shared the same horrible economics as the A345, even with fuel much cheaper back then. That said, I can recall my one and only UA 747SP trip from LAX to SYD in the mid 80s. Shared the F cabin with the actor Brian Keith and flight attendants that had lots of stories about other celebrity passengers.

Oh, the potable water supply froze up towards the end of the trip to MEL and a radio broke on the way back, extending our stop in SYD.

I run by westchester high all the time to the beach! I live a few blocks away during the school year at college. My personal favorites are the late afternoon 777/747s bound for Europe and Asia. They SCREAM over your head!

Whoa - nonstop to Brazil...

I wish -- but no such flights. Via MIA or JFK was how Brazil was served at the time.

LAXintl; UA did fly nonstop to Brazil in those days. I have a timetable somewhere that shows it as well. Flight operated about 4 days a week with a SP. Flight was only operated for a few years and discontinued in early 1994. UA even hired Portugese customer service agents to help customers with the flights and two of them are still with UA; I work with them.

Great memory there. In fact, United had one 747sp in previous livery.

But I liked this old livery better on 747sp:

I'd love to know the details, as I dont recall any such flight.

While I did not come to work till about 2 or 3pm, I worked in T-7 between 90-93 and dont remember any Brazil nonstops.

I don't remember any UAL nonstops to Brazil from Los Angeles, as for the 747SP it was either London Heathrow or Hong Kong. I'm going with LHR, around 1994 UAL was flying a 747SP between EWR and LHR. I used to see it all the time.

Alright, figure I'll do a quick fill in after just looking at the United timetable 6/9/93-9/8/93.

Departing from LAX, here are the following B747 flights shown in the timetable, now, one thing, without having the OAG, I don't know which are SP version or other since in the UA timetable, in the back in FLIGHT ROUTING, AIRCRAFT and SERVICE, it just shows all 747 under the "B747" code.

LAX NRT UA897 1240pm

LAX HKG UA1 1255pm

LAX MIA UA983 220pm

LAXGRU UA975 220pm (effective 7/15)

there were also the SYD and AKL nonstops, but those didn't depart until late every evening

and I brain-farted after seeing the above comment about LHR. UA did operate two nonstops to Heathrow from LAX, and one falls within this range and operated by a B747, the other was a dinnertime departure of 545pm flown with a B767.

LAX LHR UA934 1225pm

on a sidenote, just noticed and I find interesting, this time frame well into 1994, obviously for repositioning and overnight parking, UA flew a B757 SNA-BUR.

BUR SNA UA1215 710am 747am
SNA BUR UA230 645pm 719pm

just thought interesting to find flights like these in comparison to times that we are in now where every airline is fighting costs due to fuel crunch

UA 975 would have been the nonstop to GRU with the SP. I'll ask my friends at work today.

It was LAX-GRU.
UA briefly flew from LAX to Brazil. I even saw one of those B747SP make a tech-stop in PTY because that day, the Peruvian authorities didn't allow the aircraft to fly over Perú and wouldn't been able to get to LAX with enough fuel.

The LAX-GRU nonstop is not in the 7/92 OAG
it is in the 10/92 timetable, leaving at 1300
not in the 4/93
the 6/93 shows it resuming in July
it's not in the 6/94

The 9/93 ABC shows flight 934 74L to LHR leaving at 1225 or 1235-- and no LAX-GRU.

I'm betting the LAX-HKG flight went 744 pretty early.

That's interesting because the GCR between LAX and GRU hardly touches Peru. In fact is goes right over Panama so I wouldn't think that a route over Panama would require at least the same amount of fuel. Could it be some other air space that was closed, instead of Peru?

I remember being in high school, around 91/92, and was going from the L.A area to Philly to visit relatives like I did every year, and just to fly on a 747SP booked a UA/TW combination to fly LAX-SFO-JFK-PHL because the SFO-JFK leg was a B747SP. I think it might have been UA18, maybe, but was a 12pm noonish departure, got into JFK after 8pm or so where I had couple hours to get to my TWExpress J31 flight to PHL.

Trip comes and get to SFO with no problems and low and behold as sitting in gate area and watching the a/c pull in, number of mechanics race out to a/c and start working on wingtip on the nav light. Delay announced, and thought only minutes cuz they only had to change bulb, but nope, somewhere in the wiring was the problem with nav lights and after numerous delays and it finally being now about dinner time, they canceled the flight. Only reason I was sticking with the flight was by that time, there weren't more then 20 of us left to fly with the plane out to JFK where they needed it for ops later, and I thought how cool, first 747 flight ever and having only 20 or so pax on it, but nope. Once canceled, still worked out though, because UA rebooked me straight to PHL in first class on a DC-10 night flight with an intermediate stop in ORD, and then also automatically upgraded my return flights to business class on the transcon and F on shorter leg as an apology for inconvenience, but thank you for my patience, and I thought how cool, but darn it, still wish I got the SP flight in.

This got me checking out one of my favorite websites, departedflights.com and I learned that UA operated the 747SP between EWR and LAX in 1989. Who knew?  Smile
