The city council approved the acceptance of two Oregon lottery grants to expand the terminal by 3800 sf and lengthen the main runway to 6800 feet-even though DL is pulling out in October. Interestingly DL is pulling about 80% LF from March through July (I think their decision to bolt was premature). I hope this pays off and that QX or UA (who I think are better fits for this market) come in.

Why would they expand the terminal if nobody has commited to coming in? I say QX is most likely, but where did u get QX and UA from?

Well...
QX is the Pacific Northwest's Airline. SLE-SEA makes a lot of sense.
UA has an extensive intra-Oregon network. And SFO makes more sense as a connecting hub and O&D destination compared with SLC.

Hmm i didn't know how much UA was in Oregon, and SFO makes sense. I knew about QX, but not UA. Has SLE talked to UA and QX?

As much as I'd like to see it happen, it doesn't make complete sense to me. I'd imagine most of the people flying the SLE-SLC service were heading somewhere East and going SLE-SEA would be backtracking a little bit unless you were going to Alaska. SLE-PDX would be a shorter flight but doesn't make sense because it's too close to PDX.
Unless QX decided to serve LAX or SFO direct out of SLE maybe it would work. But to me if I was flying from SLE to California or the East Coast, flying all the way to SEA seems a bit much. But I'd still love to see it.

With regard to UA, UA has historically been the largests carrier in OR (they served SLE in the 70s) in terms of cities served. Their two western hubs of DEN and SFO woul not only offer great connections to most of the world but have significant O & D (much more than SLC).
QX/AS is the largest regional carrier in the NW with a huge hub in SEA (With a bunch of code-share connections). SEA would also have a decent sized O & D.
If UA were to come in, I could see 2x to SFo with 1x to DEN. If it were QX, I could see 2x to SEA with 1x to LAX.
Salem has had many discussions with UA and QX as well as Allegiant over the last 4 years or so (before DL came in). In fact, QX proposed 3x daily to SEA and sent a letter to DOT supporting the award of a $500K small community air development grant and Allegiant has sent a similar letter in the past.
Again, I think DL did OK-they could have done better (the airfares just got too far out of line) but with the run up of fuel costs, they bailed. DL spent almots no money marketing the flight (all marketing was done by Salem) and they still carried 46K paax in the first year (and are doing pretty well this summer). I think the city, with a catchment area of 500K could (and will) support air service if it within $50-$100 of flights out of PDX.

There is only one reason to extend the runway....And it is not to allow a Q400 nor a CRJ to land there (it's already long enough). They need to lengthen it for the MD-80. I would imagine you could figure out who might run an MD-80 into Salem perhaps twice a week to a a desert community in the Southwest. I think KWBL hit on it.
