I am a little confused here. How differnet is the B747X and X-Stretch currently in research compared with the shelved -500X/-600X? They seem quite similar.

B747X and B747-500X
- Long range
- moderate stretch to accommodate about 430-450pax

B747X-Stretch and B747-600X
- Stretched! approx 500-550pax.

So what's the difference?

They are about the same. The B 747X=B 747-500X while B 747X Stretch=B 747-600X

B 747-500X and B 747-600X were named in 1996 while they came up with these two products to compete with the A 380. However, the project was cancelled.

There is no difference to the B747X/Stretch and the B747-500X/600X, as far as I'm concern. And as much as I love the A380, I also would love to hear from Boeing that they will go ahead with the propose B747X/Stretch design.

To be honest, I've been wondering about that, too.

Is it the new wing root design, or was that already incorporated in the 1996 proposal?

The 1996 proposal featured a NEW wing and other design improvements that are/were more significant than the changes on the 747X as currently proposed.

You know, Boeing should just create four models of Next-Generation 747's. They should be the 747-500, 747-600, 747-800 and the 747-Unlimited. The -500, -600 and the -800 will all be the same size as the 747X-Stretch but will have different cockpit layouts from each other. The 747-Unlimited will be an all-cargo version that will be about 252 feet long with a wingspan of 222 feet 6 inches. And like my username says, Air New Zealand will replace their old jets with the Boeing 747-800!
