Hey All,

Since i simply LOVE aviation so much iv always wanted to know which aircraft and airline i flew on for the very first time in my life. Since i was only 2 months at the time, and my parents not really being aware if they're flying an A380 or a 717 i was wondering if you guys could help me out  Smile

This is all i know:

It was May 1989. I flew from one of the New York Airports Directly to Houston.

Does anybody have any clue what airlines flew this route at the time.

It would mean the WORLD to me.

Thank You for all your responses!

umm im not really good at this but I know some other people may be able to help. It may help them though if you told which airport in New York. Was it JFK, LGA, or was it EWR over in Newark?

If you flew Non-Stop I would bet Continental.

If you flew "Directly" who knows.

A December 1989 OAG listing has Houston Intercontinental Airport (IAH) arrivals from the three New York City Airports.

There were three flights from JFK on Pan American operating 727-200 aircraft. Seven arrivals from Laguardia (LGA) were on CO operating 737-300 and MD-80 aircraft. Newark (EWR) had seven departures to IAH on CO. Four flights were on 727-200 aircraft. The other three flights were operated with 727-100, A300 (or-310), and DC-10 aircraft.

Here's the source I used:

In May 1989, I was working for Continental Airlines at IAH.

We flew MD80s, 733s and 727-200s on the IAH-LGA route. To enhance customer service, all LGA flights were consolidated at one gate area (north concourse, east side, gate 1, 2, or 3). Working that gate was like the Bataan Death March because LGA passengers were the most difficult we had. (I'm putting it nicely.) It also was a touchy gate because Frank Lorenzo usually flew to LGA several times per month, so one would never know when he would show up at the gate.

Flying between EWR and IAH we flew mostly 727-200s which were all ex-People Express airplanes at the time. We had not completed merging our maintenance records, so People Express was still flying under a separate certificate with its own airplanes and pilots. Everybody hated the People Express airplanes because they were shabby, did not have ovens and could only serve cold food even in first class. The passengers complained constantly about this.

Periodically, A300s and DC-10s would be substituted for a 727 on the EWR-IAH #145 route. This aircraft continued on at 8:30 pm. to Mexico City where it RONed and returned in the morning leaving IAH for EWR in the 11:30am bank. This substitution was usually during the summer and at Christmas when the loads (both passenger and baggage) were very heavy to MEX. I often worked this flight because I spoke Spanish. MEX rivaled LGA for having the most difficult passengers.

This MEX flight also had a large quantity of TWOVs because it connected with the inbound DC-10-30 from LGW which arrived about 4:30pm. This was a pain because FIS usually delivered the passports for the TWOVs to the gate five minutes before departure and the passengers would come up to me constantly in a panic because they were missing their passports. I can remember as many of 20-30 TWOVS on this one flight.

That is all I can remember.

Unless I am wrong the airlines flying to Houston would have rather used Hobby airport rather than Intercontinental. I flew ORD-HOU (not IAH) on United in the 80's or IAD-HOU also on United quite a few times.

There was a better way to fly it was called Concorde

Dunno what they would rather have used, but they mostly did use IAH.
