Hello to all,
Sorry if this has been brought up before -I know the photo has definitely been posted- but I am not sure if this is the new configuration for all AY long-haul aircraft, including the MD-11. I have travelled some time ago to Asia onboard their MD-11 and recall the cabin was not very nice; no PTV, quite old seating. If the photo is an image of what all their going to look like, it is simply great! Can someone provide some info? Thanks!

The MD-11s will be gone soon (by 2010 totally, if I remember correctly) and they're currently being replaced by A340-300 and A330-300 planes, which do/will have an interior like in that picture. OH-LQA is an old ex-Virgin A340-300 and it has an older cabin (though with PTVs still). There has been talk of refitting the LQA as well with the new cabin, but so far it hasn't happened...
There's no intention to install new cabin into the MD-11s, as far as I know.

That is indeed a picture of the A340 fleet cabin. As far as I know, AY MD11 fleet is not going to be updated majorly for the remaining time they have in AY fleet before phasing them out altogether.
What is the timetable for the A340/330s to arrive? When is the next one due to arrive? When is the next MD11 due to leave the fleet? My friend is flying to BKK in November this year, I guess it will be the old lady taking him there?

But now, curious person as I am, I wonder what is that hatch in the middle of the cabin? Must be something important as the airline accepts it to be situated right there, taking the space of money making seat! Where does it lead to? Or is it even a hatch?

Quoting Andaman (Reply 4): Yes, the first MD-11 will go later this year, the last of the seven in the spring 2010.
Please tell me that my upcoming first MD11 flight will not be changed....
I am traveling JFK-HEL-JFK on OCT 23/26 just to bid farewell to my favorite 3 holer.
I assume JFK-HEL will not change until the A330s arrive next year so what route is losing an MD11 this year??

I checked the seat map which is in AY's STM for the very same reason and it says it's an "emergency hatch". But still have no idea where it leads. My only assumption is that it's got something to do with the crew rest unit which should be located somewhere in the belly.

Quoting Teme82 (Reply 3): MD11's have the same old same old until they are retired in 2010.
AY MD-11s are best avoided as most Y class seats are in a 10-abreast charter-type configuration (3-4-3) except for the smaller forward Y cabin which is 9-abreast like almost all MD-11s that were (or still are) in scheduled service with other carriers.

DCs10RULE, highly recommended to book your seat in the front cabin, rows 21-29, if you travel in Y-class.
I shall be taking what is most probably going to be my last MD11 flight in a few weeks time, when I travel CDG-HEL-JFK-HEL-CDG (A32x/MD11). I also feel sad these birds are going, they have been the back bone of AY long haul fleet for so long, and I find them good looking. But it is time to move on..
I try to write a trip report about these flights, but I am really bad at taking pictures . Not that I can't press the button, but usually I have the camera anywhere but at hand, and by the time I have got the frea***ing thing out the occasion for photo is long gone..
