What airlines have hubs at BOS? i think AA has a Mini Hub there, but nothing Commanding like at DFW or MIA... right? ....oh one more thing...
On my way to AUA (aruba) this spring i will be stopping in BOS... I heard it has cool approaches over the water, and stuff.... is this True?

Being on a coast, Boston can't really be termed a hub. But it is a very attractive station to all carriers BECAUSE of that. Delta, American, and USAirways comprise the lion's share of traffic. United is flexing its muscles as a fourth major player. For spotters BOS is rather attractive because of a good mix of airlines and aircraft types, as well as its compact size and picturesque view of the city skyline. Most but not all approaches come in over water.

DL has established a mini hub there and it's getting bigger all the time. In fact, DL is pooring hundreds of millions into a new terminal and believe it or not, BOS is the only city in the DL system that offers the full range of DL services. Not even ATL can boast that.

As for the approaches: As Boston is right on the water, winds can vary, and often change several times in the course of a day. It really depends on the winds at the time of your arrival. If you want a water approach, your best scenario would be for winds to come out of the northwest. This puts runway 33L as the primary arrival runway, which puts your approach south east of the city, and takes you in, eventually over Outer Boston Harbor. On your departure, runway 27 is the primary departure runway (with significant departures off 33L as well). If this is the case, do your best to secure a window seat on the right side of the plane. During take off, you get a great view of the airport, and a beautiful view of the Inner Boston Harbor and downtown.

The other main water approach is when the winds are out of the west. 27 is the main arrival runway, which means you come in from Northeast of the city over the ocean. The main departure runways are 22R and L, which means you'll pass over the harbour before turning out over Massachusetts Bay. That's a nice departure as well. Once again, try and get a seat on the right.

If the winds are out of the north, your approach will be on runway 4R or L, which will briefly take you over Boston Harbor, but for the most part it's a land approach. Your departure will be off of runway 9, which means you'll immediately go out over the small spit of land called the Town of Winthrop, then out over the ocean.

US Airways is currently the largest airline in Boston, with almost 200 daily departures. Delta/Delta Connection/Delta Shuttle are second, and American/American Eagle are third with about 170 and 160 daily departures, respectively. United lags far behind at a very distant fourth, with only about 65 daily departures, but unlike the other three, almost all of United's departures are on pure jets, unlike American Eagle's large SAAB hub, and US Airways with a lot of DHC-8 and Beech 1900D flights.

USAirways and Delta are in a deathmatch for largest airline at BOS. DL has more pax but USAirways more flights. American is in third, then United, Northwest. If you head south, you'll go over Hull, which is this long, thin peninsula which I like flying over. Flying over UMass and the JFK Library are also fun.

Other large airlines at BOS include British Airways, AirTran, Lufthansa, America West, Midway, and Midwest Express.

USAirways sort of has a hub there with their shuttle and they fly the 757's there so it is a mini-hub for them too.

BOS is a great airport for travellers because it is so evenly split - lower fares ... unlike fortress hubs like PIT, MSP, CVG etc.

BOS also boasts a large contingent of foreign airlines: Air Canada, BA, Virgin, EI, AF, SR, SN, LH, AZ, Olympic, KL (by way of NW), Icelandic, TAP ... pretty impressive when compared to other similarly sized cities in the USA!

As noted above, DL is pouring a lot of money into BOS: new routes (LAX, LGW), new terminal etc. I mention the LAX route because although it's been around for a while, they're still struggling with it. Or so it seems - there always seem to be web promos for this ($200 r/t give or take), large mileage bonuses for Biz Elite travel on the route etc. Plus the new LGW route that many on this very board are skeptical about. The full range of products that was eluded to above are: DL Shuttle, DL Connection, DL Express, DL main-line domestic, DL main-line international and Worldwide partners code-share flights. BOS hits 6 out of 6 on this whilst ATL gets 4 out of 6! Pretty impressive ... Looking forwaed to the new Terminal A.

Of course, UA/US could make the airport even more competitive ...

ok this is my little pointer to everyone, if you go there and have alot of time to kill take a shuttle to harboside drive (ie. executive terminal) and stand near the fence all of usairs and delta and continentals planes taxi by! its amazing plus its at the end of 28r or something like tha ti cant remember

Subtract Korean from the list of foreign airlines - they cancelled service to Logan. TAP has also pulled out of Logan.

Regarding TAP: I think they will be back. A simple matter really...Massport buses! Believe it or not, if you want an accurate list of airlines serving BOS, just ride on one of their buses. They update their lists, and automatic terminal announcements immediately when an airline comes or goes. TAP Air, despite taking down their signage, and BA officially occupying all the counters in Terminal E, that were once shared, still have signs and annoucements on Massport buses.

My guess is that they have left, but plan on returning when it is financially logical for them to do so. Boston, and southeastern Massachusetts are home to some of the highest concentrations of Portugeuse people outside of Portugal. Centres like Fall River and New Bedford, as well as Boston have significant Portugeuse/Cape Verdean populations. TAP left because they are financially strapped to the bone, and now with Swissair reporting troubles, it doesn't seem as though the situation is going to get any better. My guess is that they will be back for the Summer season.
